WASHINGTON – The No. 19 Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the St. John's Red Storm 3-2 in overtime on Thursday afternoon in both teams' regular season finale. Senior
Paula Germino-Watnick notched her first career-hat trick to get the victory for the Hoyas, including the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in overtime. With the win, GU finished the regular season 12-3-3 with a 6-1-2 mark in the BIG EAST while the Johnnies finish the season 5-12-1 on the year and 2-6-1 in league play.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
This was a game we probably should have won comfortably. St. John's has a very good player up front. She's a handful and we prepared for her all week, but we just didn't do a good job on her. She got us early in the game and she finished her goal really well, but we were able to get back at them with two good goals from Paula [Germino-Watnick]. I have to give our kids credit because they just kept going. We asked for someone to step up and make an intelligent play at the end because I felt like we were getting a little too hopeful and frantic toward the end of regulation. Jenna [Royson] made a great move inside and that's when St. John's took her down, allowing Paula to take our PK.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. John's took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the third minute as the Hoya defenders could not stop SJU's lead scorer Zsani Kajan from taking the ball to the net.
- Georgetown found the equalizer in the 17th minute from Germino-Watnick. The forward took the shot unassisted to put GU on the board.
- The Hoyas took the lead in the 28th minute with another goal from Germino-Watnick. Graduate student Amanda Carolan found her from the left side and crossed it over to her in the middle of the box to put GU ahead 2-1.
- The Red Storm tied it up 2-2 in the 62nd minute. SJU's Alex Madden dribbled the ball up to GU keeper Anna Leat and managed to get past her in the net.
- Neither team could score the game winner in regulation, forcing overtime play. Sophomore Jenna Royson was fouled inside the box in the 93rd minute, resulting in a penalty kick for GU. Germino-Watnick took the PK and was able to get past SJU's Naya Lipkens to earn the win.
OF NOTE
- The Blue & Gray outshot the Red Storm 16-2 and took 14 corner kicks while SJU did not take any.
- Georgetown's defense pressured the Johnnies enough to keep Leat safe at goal. She did not have to make any saves on the day and Lipkens tallied three.
- Germino-Watnick took a game high of five shots on the day.
- Carolan's assist landed her on the all-time list at Georgetown with 16 total. She sits with Germino-Watnick on the list at the No. 10 spot.
