Omaha, Nebraska – The second-seeded Georgetown women's soccer team blanked the sixth-seeded Providence Friars 2-0 on Thursday night in the BIG EAST Semifinals in Omaha, Nebraska. The nationally-ranked No. 18 Hoyas scored a goal in each half to advance to the championship game on Sunday in hopes of clinching their fourth-straight conference title. They will head to the championship final for the fourth year in a row to face the top-ranked Xavier Musketeers at Morrison Stadium.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
This was an impressive performance by the girls in trying circumstances. The team has been battling a virus that affected half of them and I am very proud of their mental toughness and desire to get back to another championship final and keep the season alive. Kelly Ann [Livingstone] had a great goal and despite getting injured in the process, she managed to return in the second half. I thought Amanda [Carolan]'s goal was worthy to finish off the match. We are excited to battle against Xavier on Sunday for the championship trophy.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Kelly Ann Livingstone put GU on the board in the 32nd minute off of a free kick taken by senior Carson Nizialek. Nizialek found a sea of Hoyas inside the box and freshman Julia Leas managed to get a head on the ball and helped Livingstone knock it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
- Graduate student Amanda Carolan made it 2-0 for the Blue & Gray with an unassisted shot in the 57th minute after she managed to get past a Friar defender to put it past Providence's Shelby Hogan.
OF NOTE
- The Hoyas outshot Providence 20-10 and took seven corners to the Friars' two.
- Freshman keeper Anna Leat made three saves compared to Hogan's seven.
- The clean sheet marked Leat's seventh of her rookie season, tying her for eighth on the Georgetown list with most shutouts in a single season.
- With the goal, Carolan beat her single-season record at Georgetown with 11 goals in a season. She sits at No. 7 on the list as her 2015 record is set at the 10th spot with 10 goals. She now sits at the No. 3 spot on the all-time list with 34 career goals and is No. 10 on the single-season record list with 29 points.
