Top-Seeded Georgetown Hosts Butler in BIG EAST Semifinals

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the fifth-seeded Butler Bulldogs (11-6-1) in a BIG EAST Championship Semifinal matchup on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Shaw Field. The nationally No. 3 Hoyas are currently 14-1-2 on the season after finishing league play with a record of 7-0-2.

About the Hoyas
  • On Monday, senior captain Dylan Nealis was the Defensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season, while junior Jacob Montes earned Midfielder of the Year honors.  Sophomore Giannis Nikopolidis was also named the Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.  Nealis, Montes, Nikopolidis and junior captain Derek Dodson were all named to the All-BIG EAST First Team with Montes being a unanimous selection.  The Blue & Gray led all schools with four first team honorees.  Additionally, senior captain Achara and sophomore midfielder Sean Zawadzki both earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
  • Last last week, defender Sean O'Hearn was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his assist on GU's goal in the regular season final against Creighton.
  • Georgetown won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as well as a bye and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament.  This is GU's sixth regular season title in program history.
  • Dodson leads the team in scoring with 20 points on seven goals and six assists.  He is followed by Montes with a team-high eight goals and two assists for 18 points.
  • Achara is third with five goals and four assists for 14 points, while Paul Rothrock rounds out the top four with a goal and a squad-high seven assists for nine points to tie Zach Riviere who has four goals and one assist.
 
About the Bulldogs
  • Butler is coming off a 1-0 win at fourth-seeded Creighton Saturday night in Omaha.  Freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. netted a penalty kick in the 84th minute, which proved to the difference in the match.
  • Cabrera, Jr. was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year on Monday as four players earned All-BIG EAST honors.  Cabrera, Jr. earned second team All-BIG EAST honors, while seniors Brandon Guhl and Jared Timmer, along with sophomore Jack Haywood, were selected to the third team.
 
Series with Butler
  • Georgetown is 6-1 all-time against the Bulldogs and 3-0 at home.
  • Earlier this season, the Hoyas won by a score of 3-0 in Indianapolis.  Montes scored a pair of goals, and Riviere added one of his own as GU scored all three goals in the second half.
  • The last meeting on the Hilltop was a 3-0 Georgetown victory during the 2017 campaign. 
 
BIG EAST Championship
  • The Hoyas are 17-19-5 overall in the BIG EAST Tournament and 11-1-1 at home as well as 7-7-1 in the semifinal game.
  • This will be the first meeting between the squads in the BIG EAST postseason.
  • The winner of Wednesday's game will host the championship against the winner of No. 2 St. John's and No. 3 Providence on Sunday at noon.  The game will be broadcast live on FS2.
