Bucknell Rallies Past Georgetown 20-17

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Georgetown University football team held a 17-6 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Bucknell scored 14 unanswered points to defeat the Hoyas 20-17 in a Patriot League game on Saturday. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 5-4 on the season and 1-4 in conference play, while the Bison improve to 3-7 and 3-2 in the league.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Hoyas finished with 362 total yards with 199 yards through the air and 163 rushing yards.
  • The GU defense held Bucknell to just 90 total yards through the first three quarters, including one passing yard and 37 total yards in the first half. The Bison did not register a first down until their final drive of the half.
  • Gunther Johnson completed 14-of-24 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Joseph Brunell also completed six passes for 81 yards.
  • Joshua Stakely led the rushing attack with his first career 100-yard game, finishing with 139 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown.
  • Joshua Tomas had team highs of seven catches for 83 yards.
  • Xavier Reddick and Wes Bowers finished with nine tackles apiece, while Jonathan Honore grabbed his team-leading third interception of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a Tomas punt return that set the Hoyas up at the Bucknell 39-yard line, Johnson capped a six-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tomas to put GU up 7-0.
  • On Georgetown's next drive, a fumble was returned 55 yards for a Bucknell touchdown. Quincy Chinwuko blocked the PAT attempt to keep the Hoyas in the lead, 7-6.
  • Brad Hurst connected on a 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 10-6.
  • The GU defense allowed just 37 total yards in the first half, including just one passing yard, and did not allow a first down until the final drive of the half as the Hoyas led 10-6 at the midway point.
  • Following Honore's interception, Johnson pitched it to Stakely who ran it in from 15 yards out to extend the GU lead to 17-6 midway through the third quarter.
  • Bucknell scored two touchdowns within three minutes of each other to take the 20-17 lead with 10:47 left in the fourth quarter.
  • The Hoyas were able to run just eight plays the remainder of the game as the Bison ran out the clock.
 
OF NOTE
  • Stakely's 139 rushing yards were the most by a Hoya since Jo'el Kimpela had 142 yards against Bucknell in 2015.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Blue & Gray will close the season on Saturday, Nov. 23 when the squad travels to Holy Cross. Kickoff in Worcester, Massachusetts is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on Stadium.
