Hoyas Host Providence in BIG EAST Championship

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the third-seeded Providence College Friars (14-5) in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday afternoon at noon at Shaw Field. The nationally No. 3 Hoyas are currently 14-1-3 on the season after finishing league play with a record of 7-0-2.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown advanced to the championship game for the eighth time in program history after tying fifth-seeded Butler 2-2 on Wednesday at Shaw Field.  The Hoyas relinquished two leads in the game, but advanced in a 4-3 shootout.
  • Sean Zawadzki scored on an assist from Dylan Nealis, and Achara connected on a penalty kick in the draw.
  • On Monday, Nealis was the Defensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season, while Jacob Montes earned Midfielder of the Year honors.  Giannis Nikopolidis was also named the Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.  Nealis, Montes, Nikopolidis and Derek Dodson were all named to the All-BIG EAST First Team with Montes being a unanimous selection.  The Blue & Gray led all schools with four first team honorees.  Additionally, Achara and Zawadzki both earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
  • Last last week, defender Sean O'Hearn was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his assist on GU's goal in the regular season finale against Creighton.
  • Georgetown won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as well as a bye and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament.  This is GU's sixth regular season title in program history.
  • Dodson leads the team in scoring with 20 points on seven goals and six assists.  He is followed by Montes with a team-high eight goals and two assists for 18 points.
  • Achara is third with six goals and four assists for 16 points, while Paul Rothrock rounds out the top four with a goal and a squad-high seven assists for nine points to tie Zach Riviere who has four goals and one assist.
 
About the Friars
  • Providence defeated second-seeded St. John's 2-1 on the road in the semifinal to advance to the championship game. 
  • The Friars downed Marquette 3-0 in a first round matchup, sitting at 2-0 in the tournament.
  • Sunday is PC's fifth trip to the championship game in program history. The team won the championship in 2014.
  • Five Friars were named All-BIG EAST as two earned spots on the first team.
 
Series with Providence
  • Georgetown is 17-13-3 all-time against the Friars and 9-8-1 at home.
  • GU is 2-1-1 against the Friars in the BIG EAST Championship.
  • Earlier this season, the Hoyas won by a score of 2-1 at Shaw Field.  Dodson connected on a penalty kick in the 48th minute, and Foster McCune added the insurance goal in the 75th minute.  The Friars managed to pull within one in the 80th minute but the Hoyas held on for the victory. 
 
BIG EAST Championship
  • The Hoyas are 17-19-6 overall in the BIG EAST Tournament and 11-1-2 at home as well as 3-4 in the championship game.
  • Georgetown has qualified for three of the past four BIG EAST Tournaments, advancing to and winning the championship in all three (2015, 2017, 2018).
  • The winner of Sunday's game will earn the league's automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament.
