Georgetown Travels to George Washington on Sunday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will make the short trip down M Street to face the George Washington Colonials on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Smith Center.  The Hoyas are currently 1-3 on the season, while the Colonials sit at a record of 2-3.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas lost in a close one to James Madison on Thursday evening at McDonough Arena.  GU led by as much as 17, but eventually fell by a score of 66-59.
  • Brianna Jones and Tayanna Jones led the Blue & Gray with 13 points apiece, while Shanniah Wright finished with 10 points and managed to pull down five rebounds.
  • Anita Kelava had a team high of seven rebounds and three blocks while also adding four points. Graceann Bennett pulled down five boards along with Wright. Breonna Mayfield hauled in six and added four points to the scoring column.
  • Both teams managed 36 rebounds and the Hoya defense forced 16 JMU turnovers while committing 16.
  • The Hoyas shot 31.6 percent (18 for 57) from the field but allowed the Dukes 46.4 percent (26 for 56).This will be GU's third road test of the season sitting at 1-1 away from McDonough Arena with a loss to Davidson but a 10-point victory at Pitt.
  • Sunday's contest begins a five-game road swing for the Blue & Gray which will play a pair of games in both Los Angeles and New York over the next two weeks.
 
About the Colonials
  • George Washington is 2-3 on the season with victories over Villanova (68-56) and Memphis (64-63).  Most recently, the team fell at No. 9/10 Maryland by a score of 88-54.
  • Both wins came on the road as GWU is 0-1 at home with a 75-50 loss to Princeton.
  • The Colonials are led by Sydney Zambrotta who is averaging 13.3 ppg on the year, she is followed by Tori Hyduke who has 10.4 ppg as the two players in double figures.
  • GW was selected to finish seventh in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference as Neila Luma and Zambrotta were both preseason all-conference selections.
 
Series History
  • The Hoyas are 18-19 all-time against the Colonials with a record of 6-11 on the road.
  • The last meeting between the schools was a 65-54 GW victory at the Smith Center during the 2017 campaign.
  • The first meeting in the series was a 52-42 Georgetown victory in GU's first year as a varsity sport.  The Hoyas went 6-5 that season.
