Hoyas Drop 65-61 Decision to UNC Greensboro

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a 65-61 game to the visiting UNC Greensboro Spartans (6-2) on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena.

ON THE RECORD
"We're still building, we still have a long way to go. One of the things I tell my team is that until they stop thinking about me and start thinking about we - that's when we're gonna win. Right now we're too selfish. And we need to be more unselfish." - Head Coach Patrick Ewing

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • James Akinjo led all scorers with 12 points as one of two Hoyas (4-3) in double figures.
  • Omer Yurtseven added 10 points on the day and a game-best nine boards.
  • Georgetown shot 36.8 percent from the floor while UNCG hit 38.1 percent from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown went up early, taking a 16-7 lead behind buckets from five different Hoyas with Akinjo leading the way with five points.
  • Hot shooting from the Spartans would eventually tie the game at 20.
  • An 11-4 run for the Blue & Gray, capped by a Mac McClung 3-pointer, gave GU the seven-point lead with 1:37 on the clock.
  • A pair of UNCG buckets cut the deficit to two but an Akinjo free throw sent the Hoyas into the break with a 32-29 lead.
  • The Spartans came out firing in the second half, using a 13-3 run to take a 42-35 lead with 15:08 in the second half.
  • The Hoyas answered with an 11-0 run of their own that started at the charity stripe and saw buckets from Yurtseven and 3-pointer from Jahvon Blair to reclaim the lead (46-42).
  • Despite leading by five on a Jamorko Pickett trey, the Spartans wouldn't go away tying the game at 49 and once more at 54 before taking a four-point lead (58-54) with 3:37 remaining.
  • A conventional three-point play from Jagan Mosely pulled GU within one (60-59).
  • Trips to the free throw line for the Spartans provided the 65-61 score at the final whistle.

COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will head back out on the road for a two-game trip, starting with a matchup at Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The game is part of the inaugural BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. Tipoff in Stillwater, Oklahoma is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ while fans can listen locally on WOL 1450 with Rich Chvotkin on the call.
