No. 3 Hoyas Battle No. 6 Washington in NCAA Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON – The third-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will host the No. 6 University of Washington Huskies in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at noon at Shaw Field with a trip to the 2019 College Cup on the line. The nationally-ranked No. 2 Hoyas are currently 17-1-3 on the season and earned the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the tournament as well as earning a first-round bye as one of the top 16 seeds.

How They Got Here
  • GU defeated Louisville 5-1 on Sunday in the NCAA Third Round marking GU's second-consecutive outing with five goals.
  • Juniors Jacob Montes and Paul Rothrock scored a pair of goals apiece, and classmate Jack Beer added one of his own as the Blue & Gray cruised to victory.
  • Sophomore Giannis Nikopolidis had a good game with two saves as the defense also tallied one for a total of three.
  • Georgetown outshot Louisville 18-11 (10-4 SOG) and both teams had five corners apiece in the contest.
  • In the second round, Georgetown downed Pitt 5-0 marking GU's largest margin of victory ever in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Senior captain Dylan Nealis was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist becoming just the fifth ever for the Hoyas.
  • On Friday, the coaching staff was named the East Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches.  This is the fourth time the Hoyas have earned the honor and the third for Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • Georgetown made history earlier this season with the program's first three-peat winning the BIG EAST Championship for the third consecutive year in a 3-1 victory over Providence College at Shaw Field.  It was just the second time in program history that the squad has won both the regular season and the championship in the same year. 
  • Georgetown has been in the national polls all season.  The most recent RPI had the Hoyas at No. 2 and the United Soccer Coaches' Poll put GU at No. 2.  Georgetown sat at No. 2 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's most recent poll.
 
NCAA Tournament History
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the eighth under Wiese. 
  • The Hoyas have been to the tournament 10 times with now seven trips to the Round of 16 (2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997) and now three to the quarterfinals (2019,2014, 2012). 
  • In 2012, the team was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament with previous appearances in 2010, 1997 and 1994.
  • The Hoyas are 11-6-5 overall in the NCAA Tournament and 1-0-1 in the quarterfinals.
  • The No. 3 seed ties the highest seed in program history.  Georgetown was the No. 3 overall seed in both 2012 and 2015.
 
About the Huskies
  • Washington is 17-3 on the season and coming in as the No. 6 overall seed.
  • The team defeated Boston College (2-0) and eleventh-seeded Marshall (4-1) to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
  • Washington is coached by Jamie Clark, son of longtime coach Bobby Clark who coached Wiese at Dartmouth and Wiese was an assistant for at both Stanford and Notre Dame.
 
Series with Washington
  • This is the first meeting between the squads.
  • GU has never faced a team from the Pac-12 in the NCAA Tournament.
