Men’s Soccer Staff Named United Soccer Coaches East Regional Staff of the Year

WASHINGTON – With an impressive season still ongoing, Georgetown University Head Men's Soccer Coach Brian Wiese and his staff have been recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as the East Regional Staff of the Year announced on Friday. The award recognizes the 2019 Regional Staff of the Year winners for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III in both men's and women's soccer.

Each of the 48 coaching staffs receiving Regional Staff of the Year honors will be recognized at the United Soccer Coaches College Coaches Awards Reception on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2019 at the convention in Baltimore.

In addition, the Regional Staff of the Year recipients will be placed on the United Soccer Coaches ballot for National Staff of the Year consideration within their respective NCAA division. The ballot will also include the addition of coaching staffs from any schools which advance to the semifinals of their NCAA Championship.

This is the fourth time in program history that GU has earned the honor and the third for Wiese (2018, 2010) whose 2019 staff includes Assistant Coaches Mike Casper and Connor Klekota as well as Volunteer Assistant Coach Brian Bouhl.   In 2012 after appearing in the national championship game, Wiese and staff won the Division I National Coach of the Year award.

Now in his 14th season on the Hilltop, Wiese has seen the most success in the program's history. Wiese and the Hoyas have placed the program on the national stage and Georgetown is regarded as one of the top contenders in the country year after year.

In his tenure at Georgetown, Wiese has coached 20 players who have signed with an MLS squad, one Hermann Trophy finalist, four Hermann Trophy semifinalists, 10 All-Americans, 33 regional All-Americans, 14 BIG EAST Players of the Year and 57 All-BIG EAST honorees as well as the College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

On the academic side, he has had two Academic All-Americans, two Academic All-Region honorees, two BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes and one Elite89 Award winner.

The team has seen unprecedented success under Wiese with eight NCAA Tournament berths in a 10-year span. The squad has also won five BIG EAST regular season championships, four BIG EAST Championships and been ranked among the top 25 in 10 seasons including stints at No. 1 in the nation.

Georgetown made history earlier this season with the program's first three-peat winning the BIG EAST Championship for the third consecutive year in a 3-1 victory over Providence College at Shaw Field.  It was just the second time in program history that the squad has won both the regular season and the championship in the same year.

The Blue & Gray is the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host an NCAA Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at noon at Shaw Field.  A live broadcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats can be found in the schedule at GUHoyas.com. Tickets can be purchased here and tickets for Georgetown students are free.
