WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University track & field teams were in Boston and Staten Island, New York on Saturday as they competed in the Scarlet and White Invitational, hosted by Boston University, and the Villanova Invitational, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. After an eventful day of competition, the Hoyas were able to turn in solid performances from both their sprinters and distance runners in a number of events.
Scarlet and White Invitational
All-American
Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and junior
Jack Salisbury (Rumford, R.I. / La Salle Academy) both ran to top-10 finishes in the men's mile recording times of 4:04.35 and 4:04.39, respectively.
Joshua Bell (Nashville, Tenn. / Brentwood Academy) posted a first-place prelim time in the men's 800-meter run to advance to the finals where he finished in eighth place at a time of 1:51.34. Freshman
Ian Delgado (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) followed right behind with a time of 1:51.72 in his first career collegiate 800-meter race.
"Overall I thought we had a solid meet," Assistant Track & Field Coach
Brandon Bonsey said. "Joshua, Ian and Ethan competed well in the 800-meter run with Joshua winning the heat in a personal record. Ian and Ethan had great performances in their first collegiate 800s including a two-second personal best for Ethan. The fastest heat of the Mile was an odd race with a very slow first 200 meters, but Spencer and Jack both ran right at their personal bests. Maazin also ran a three-second personal record in his first collegiate Mile. I think this meet served its purpose and now we will get recovered and ready for next week."
Villanova Invitational
The Blue & Gray was able to record a number of personal bests in a series of events.
Taylor Williams (Hatboro, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham) raced the clock in the finals of the 200-meter dash and was able to dominate the field to win with a season's best time of 24.43 seconds.
Cassidy Palmer (Bloomfield, Conn. / Bloomfield) was also a finalist in the 60-meter dash running a personal best of 7.73 seconds in the prelims and 7.85 seconds in the finals placing sixth overall.
Several Hoyas on the men's side made their 200-meter dash debuts and turned out strong performances.
Nate Alleyne (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan),
Lawrence Leake (Huntington, N.Y. / Huntington) and
D'Andre Barriffe (Jamaica, N.Y. / Bishop Loughlin Memorial) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, all dipping under 22 seconds. Alleyne won the second heat in a time of 21.74 seconds, just edging Leake who ran a personal best of 21.89 seconds. Barriffe ran out an easy winner of the third heat with a time of 21.96 seconds. The three now have the top three times in the BIG EAST.
"We had some good performances in the 200-meter dash especially from the men, who were all competing in their first 200-meter races of the season," Associate Track & Field Coach
Alton McKenzie said. "Nate, Lawrence and D'Andre showed our depth at this distance and this is a good indicator of what's possible during the championship portion of the season. Taylor also ran a great 200-meter dash for the overall win and a season's best. It was also great seeing Cassidy run a personal record in the 60-meter dash prelims. We just need to stay healthy and get ready for bigger performances during our post-season competition."
Georgetown is back in action next weekend, as the squad will head to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic for two days of races starting on Friday, Feb. 8.
