Hoyas Power Past Saint Joseph’s 8-4

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Georgetown University baseball team used a 17-hit attack to close out its spring break trip to Florida with an 8-4 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-12 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 2-9.

Six different Hoyas had at least two hits. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) led the way with four hits, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, and scored four runs while driving in two. Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) had three hits and two RBIs. Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University), Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk), Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) all had two hits apiece.

Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) started on the mound and went 5.0-plus innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three. Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emory Weiner) pitched the final four innings with two strikeouts for his first career save.

The Hoyas used three-straight singles with two outs to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. Shots to right by Davis and McCabe put runners on the corners before Willis grounded sharply off the pitcher's glove to give GU a 1-0 lead.

Saint Joseph's responded with singles runs in the second and third innings to jump in front, 2-1.

Georgetown tied things back up in the bottom of the fourth with four singles. That last one by Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) scored McCabe to knot the score at two.

The Hawks retook the lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but the Hoyas answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) led off with a double into the left field corner and scored on a single by Ruedisili. A double by Ryan M. Davis put two runners in scoring position before Ruedisili scored on an RBI ground out by McCabe. Willis followed with a single down the third base line to score another run and give GU a 5-3 advantage.

Saint Joseph's pulled within one in the top of the sixth as a high bouncing ball made its way into the outfield to score a run and make it a 5-4 Georgetown lead.

Ryan M. Davis gave the Hoyas a cushion with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. His blast over the fence in right-center field scored Ruedisili and extended the lead to 7-4. He singled in the eighth, stole second and scored on an errant throw to provide the final score, 8-4.

The Hoyas will return home to play nine of their next 10 games at Shirley Povich Field. They will open a five-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon against Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
