Rally Falls Short for Baseball at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – The Georgetown University baseball team reached double digit hits for the third-straight game, but a late rally fell short as the Hoyas lost a tight game to Stetson 5-4 on Saturday evening at Conrad Park as part of the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Hatters improve to 3-6.

Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla. / Venice) started on the mound and gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and four walks. He tied his season high with five strikeouts. Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) led the offense with four hits and also added a pair of stolen bases. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had three hits and was on base four times with a walk. Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) and Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) each had a pair of hits.

After putting base runners on in each of the first two innings on doubles by McCabe and Willis, the Hoyas broke through for a run in the top of the third. Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) drew a leadoff walk and, two batters later, a walk to McCabe put two runners on. Nelson then looped a single over the second base bag that just eluded the diving infielder, allowing Barreca to score to give GU a 1-0 lead.

Georgetown doubled the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Three-consecutive two-out singles by McCabe, Nelson and Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) loaded the bases before Willis drew an eight-pitch walk to make it a 2-0 game.

Stetson rallied with four runs, three of them earned, in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) led off with a walk and James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa. / William Penn Charter School) pinch ran for him. Martinez singled into right field to put runners on the corners before Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) pinch hit and lofted a sacrifice fly to score Gabor and cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Hatters answered back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the eighth to go back up by two, 5-3.

Consecutive one-out singles by McCabe and Nelson put runners on the corners in the top of the ninth. Nolan Matsko (Baltimore, Md. / Dulaney) grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring McCabe. A single by Willis put runners on the corners again, but a ground out ended the game.

The Hoyas will close out the weekend on Saturday morning when they return to Conrad Park to play Saint Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
