Hoyas Use Six Doubles To Beat ETSU 5-3

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team used a season-high six doubles to snap a seven-game losing streak, defeating East Tennessee State University 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-21 on the year while ETSU drops to 21-6.

Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) led the Hoyas with two RBI doubles. He also reached base via a walk. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) was also on base three times with two RBI hits and a walk. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had two singles. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) doubled and scored two runs.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) started on the mound and went 5.2 strong innings, only allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) allowed just one run on one hit in 3.1 innings of relief. He struck out four for the save.

The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, using three-straight doubles to take a 2-0 lead. Achecar, Weisenberg and Rosen all doubled with one out to give GU the advantage. Rosen doubled in Achecar to extend the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

After ETSU cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, another RBI double, this time by James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa. / William Penn Charter School), scored Rosen from first to put GU up 4-2 in the top of the sixth.

In the top of the ninth, Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) singled and was replaced by Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) as a pinch runner. An error moved Nelson to second before he scored on a single by Weisenberg to make it a 5-2 game.

ETSU hit a solo home run in the ninth but Morreale shut the door, his first save of the season, for the 5-3 victory.

The Hoyas will return home to Shirley Povich Field for a midweek matchup against George Mason on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Georgetown will then open BIG EAST play the weekend of April 5-7 at Xavier.
