Georgetown Defeats George Mason 4-1

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team used a strong effort from four different pitchers to defeat George Mason 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-21 on the season while the Patriots fall to 11-16.

Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) made his first career start on the mound and, under a strict pitch limit, fired 2.0 innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout. Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) pitched 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and three walks while setting a career high with six strikeouts. Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) retired both batters he faced and Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) threw a perfect inning for his third save of the season.

Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) was on base twice with a double and a walk, scoring two runs to lead the Hoya offense. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had a hit and two RBIs.

The Hoyas wasted no time getting on the board as doubles by Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) and Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.) gave GU a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. A walk and a single loaded the bases before Weisenberg singled into left field to score two more runs and give Georgetown a 3-0 advantage after the first inning.

George Mason got a run back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to cut GU's lead to 3-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth. Achecar lined a two-out double down the right field line and scored when Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) reached on a throwing error to put the Hoyas up 4-1.

The Patriots threatened in the eighth, but Tonas came out of the bullpen with two runners in scoring position and got a shallow fly out and a strikeout to end the inning. Grzebinski retired the final three batters to preserve the win.

The Hoyas will open an eight-game road trip this weekend, beginning BIG EAST play with a three-game series at Xavier. Friday's series opener will start at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). Saturday's game is set for 1 p.m. while Sunday's series finale is scheduled for noon.
