Hoyas Post Strong Showing at Knecht Cup

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's rowing team sent seven boats to compete in the Knecht Cup regatta over the weekend with various results. The two-day event took place on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

"The team saw some solid competition at Knecht Cup this weekend," said head coach Kendall Mulligan. "The team raced hard and is looking forward to continued progress over the next few weeks ."

The Blue & Gray hit the water at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning as the Women's Lightweight Eight boat opened the day in event 13. The Hoyas finished third, which put them in the Grand Final on Sunday where they finished sixth. The squad also competed against the Women's Varsity Eight boat in event 29 on Saturday in a head-to-head battle in heat three. The openweight boat clocked a time of 6:38.17 and finished first while the lightweight boat finished just 8.48 seconds behind. In the Grand Final, the openweights finished in fourth while the lightweights finished fourth in the Petite Final, just three seconds off first place finisher, Ithaca.
 
Next, the Women's Varsity Four event saw the Hoyas crossing the finish line in second place, good enough for a lane in the Grand Final on Sunday where they finished fifth with a time of 7:51.96, just two seconds off their preliminary time.
 
The Women's Second Varsity Four boat finished fourth in its heat but with a time of 8:28.75, which put the Hoyas ahead of the third and fourth place finishers in the first heat and granted them a place in the Grand Final. The squad finished fifth in the final on Sunday but improved on their Saturday time by 16 seconds. 
 
In event 16, the Women's Lightweight Four race, the Hoyas finished in second place, 6.59 seconds behind Princeton. The boat then took fifth in the Grand Final with a time of 7:42.02.
 
At 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, the Women's Second Varsity Eight boat hit the water and finished in fourth place of its heat and advanced to the Petite Final on Sunday where the squad finished first in the field of three along with Harvard-Radcliffe and Ithaca.
 
The last lightweight boat to compete on Saturday was the Women's Varsity Quad. The Hoyas finished an impressive 22.85 seconds ahead of the field for Georgetown's third first place finish of the weekend. The boat then crossed the finish line third in the final on Sunday for a time of 7:43.29.
 
Both the lightweight and openweight teams will be returning to the water on Saturday, April 20. The lightweight squad will compete in the Princeton Duel in Princeton, New Jersey while the openweight boats will return to Cherry Hill to compete in the Cherry Hill Invite. Results will be posted on GUHoyas.com.
