Women’s Golf Aims for Third-Straight BIG EAST Championship

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's golf team travels to Callawassie, South Carolina this weekend for the 2019 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship, presented by Jeep, as the Hoyas look to defend their back-to-back titles. The Championship, which will be held Friday through Sunday, April 19-21, is scheduled for 54 holes over three days on the Dogwood and Magnolia Courses at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.

Teams will tee off at 8 a.m. each morning, and live scoring will be available at GUHoyas.com. Friday's threesomes are determined by seeding, while Saturday's and Sunday's groupings will be assembled from the previous day's leaderboard. The Hoyas will be competing against the five other BIG EAST schools that participate in women's golf including Butler, Creighton, St. John's, Seton Hall and Xavier for the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

Last spring, the Hoyas carded a three-day score of 39-over par 903 to win their second-straight BIG EAST Championship by 20 strokes. Jacquelyn Eleey (C'18) became the first player in BIG EAST history to win the individual tile for a second time as she turned in a 1-over par 73. Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) earned runner-up honors while Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake Senior) and Pendleton Bogache (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Episcopal [Va.]) finished among the top 10.

Head Coach Kate Schanuel will send out an experienced lineup that includes four members of last season's championship squad. This year's lineup includes seniors Parsells, Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. Andrew's) and Bogache along with junior Fitzgibbons and sophomore Elizabeth Nguyen (Pinehurst, N.C. / Pinecrest).

Parsells is coming off her first career tournament victory, claiming medalist honors with 2-over par 218 at the 2019 Hoya Invitational last week. She ranks sixth in the BIG EAST with a 75.8 stroke average in eight tournaments this year.

Popowitz, who finished sixth at the Hoya Invitational, leads GU with a 75.4 stroke average that ranks fourth in the conference. She has been Georgetown's top finisher in three of the four tournaments this spring and five overall.

Bogache is third on the Hoyas with a 76.2 stroke average, ranking 10th overall in the BIG EAST. She was GU's top finisher twice this season and is looking for her second-straight top-10 finish at the BIG EAST Championship.

Fitzgibbons, who is averaging 77.5 strokes per round this season, is competing in her third BIG EAST Championship in as many years and is looking for her third-straight top-10 performance.

Nguyen will be competing in her first BIG EAST Championship. The sophomore, who enters with a 78.0 stroke average in four tournaments this year, is coming off a career-best fourth-place finish at the Hoya Invitational. Playing as an individual, Nguyen turned in scores of 72 and 73 in her final two rounds to card a 5-over par 221.
