No. 19/18 Hoyas Collect 10th Win of Season in 23-7 Victory at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. – Georgetown University's No. 19/18 men's lacrosse team defeated NJIT 23-7 on Saturday to earn its 10th victory of the season. The Hoyas have now posted double digit wins in 15 different seasons in program history.

Thirteen different Hoyas (10-4) scored in the victory. It was Georgetown's first time hitting the 20 goal mark since 2001 as the Blue & Gray posted the most goals in a game since 1999.

Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) led the Hoyas with four goals and two assists for six points. With 73 (46G, 27A) points on the season, he has now posted the second most points in a single season in Georgetown history. His 46 goals are a career-high and tie him for third most in a season on the Hilltop.

Dylan Watson (Guelph, Ontario / The Hill Academy) added six points (3G, 3A) and Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) added four goals. Kevin Petrillo (Herndon, Va. / Westfield) added three points with a goal and two assists, Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y. / IMG Academy) and Peter Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) both had two goals, and Declan McDermott (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) notched a pair of assists. James Reilly (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) and Derek Altobello (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill) both had a goal and an assist.

Austin McDonald (Olney, Md. / Georgetown Prep), Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial), Cullen Morgan (Bedford, N.Y. / Fox Lane), Mason Bonnie (San Francisco, Calif. / Deerfield / Lawrenceville) and Jack Elders (Tiburon, Calif. / Redwood) all had lone goals while Justin Meichner (New Canaan, Conn. / New Canaan / Taft) and Jack Kelly (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) were both credited with an assist.

Reilly teamed with Alex Bean (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) to go 23 for 34 (.676) on faceoffs. Carrying the load to start the game, Reilly went 15 for 23 (.651) with a game-high 12 grounds balls while Bean went 8 for 11 (.727) with four ground balls to close out the game.

Defensively, Joe LiCalzi (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) and Drew Abate (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) were both credited with a pair of caused turnovers.

In goal, Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood / Avon Old Farms) played the entire first half and picked up the win with four saves. Chris Brandau (Timonium, Md. / Boys' Latin) and Jack Stephenson (Greenwich, Conn. / Brunswick) split the final two frames, collecting three and four saves, respectively.

The host Highlanders (2-12) got on the board first, scoring just 36 seconds into the game. It was all Georgetown from there, starting with a 4-0 run over the next seven minutes with goals from Watson, McDonald and Bucci to give the Hoyas a 4-1 advantage. NJIT would add a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the frame to salvage a 5-3 score after the opening 15 minutes.

In the third, GU's offense exploded as the Blue & Gray posted a 10-1 frame to lead 15-4 at halftime. Ten different Hoyas had scored a goal by halftime and all four of Carraway's goals came in the quarter.

Georgetown took advantage of the halftime lead and emptied the bench in the second half. Every Hoya that dressed played in the game including significant minutes in the final two frames.

Max Wilson led NJIT with two goals.

Georgetown closes out the 2019 regular season against visiting St. John's in the Nation's Capital on Saturday, April 27. The game will serve as Senior Day for 12 Hoyas playing their last game at Cooper Field.
