Hoyas Fall to GW

WASHINGTON – George Washington scored seven runs in the fourth inning to pull away and defeat the Georgetown University baseball team 18-6 on Wednesday evening at Shirley Povich Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 13-27 on the season while the Colonials improve to 23-18.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.) led the Hoyas with two hits and was also on base with a walk. James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa. / William Penn Charter School) and AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) each had a single and a double while Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley), Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) and Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) were all on base twice with a hit and a walk. Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) hit his second career home run.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) started on the mound and, on a strict pitch limit, fired a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts. Jack Weeks (Reston, Va. / Paul VI) tossed 2.2 innings of relief allowing just one run with one strikeout. Chase Walter (Winston-Salem, N.C. / Forsyth Country Day School) struck out two in an inning of work.

GW opened the scoring with four-straight hits and a sacrifice fly, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Colonials broke the game open with seven unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning. They tacked on four more in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The Hoyas sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the sixth inning, scoring six times to make it a 17-6 game. A double, walk and single loaded the bases before Barreca drew a walk to force home a run. Rosen followed with his second home run of the season, a grand slam over the center field fence. A pair of singles restarted the rally before Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) lined an RBI single into right field to cap off the inning.

The Colonials added another run in the top of the ninth to provide the final score.

The Hoyas will remain home to host St. John's in a BIG EAST Conference series this weekend at Shirley Povich Field. Friday and Saturday's games are set for 7 p.m. while Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and a video stream for all three games will be available at GUHoyas.com.
