MAISA Spring Women's Dinghy Championship (April 20-21; Bronx, N.Y.)
At the MAISA Women's Championship at SUNY Maritime, nine berths were on the line for the Sperry College Sailing Women's National Championship next month in Newport, Rhode Island. In the 16-team regatta, the competition began with heavy rain and very windy conditions. As the opening day of the regatta went on, the rain backed off but the wind did not and forced numerous delays.
During the first day of racing, only six A races and four B races were completed. The Hoyas sailed well on Saturday in both divisions despite the conditions. On Sunday, the winds were much lighter but the conditions were still challenging. Big wind shifts and a strong current kept the competitors on their toes. The Hoyas finished seventh overall with a combined total of 189 points, 10 points behind Old Dominion and 16 points ahead of St. Mary's.
Division A finished seventh with 104 points and was led by
Haddon Hughes (Houston, Texas / Episcopal),
