Hoyas Complete Sweep with 4-1 Victory Over St. John’s

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team completed its first ever series sweep over St. John's, winning 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field in a BIG EAST Conference game. With the win, the Hoyas move to 16-27 on the season and 5-4 in BIG EAST play while the Red Storm fall to 23-17 overall and 5-7 in conference action.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) completed a dominant weekend of GU pitching, firing 8.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits and four walks. He struck out nine to give him 215 in his career, passing Eddie Pena (2002-05) for third all-time in Georgetown history. Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout for his eighth save of the season and third in as many days.

Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) led the Hoya offense with two hits and was on base three times with a walk while adding an RBI and a run scored. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) was also on base twice with an RBI double and a walk while Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) and Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) each hit solo home runs.

The Hoyas put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Weisenberg lined an RBI single into right-center field to give GU a 1-0 lead. Nelson doubled the advantage with a solo home run, his third of the season, well over the left field fence.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning when Ruedisili lined his team-leading eighth home run over the right field fence for a solo shot. Weisenberg restarted the rally with a single. On a hit-and-run, Davis doubled into the left-center field gap to score Weisenberg from first and push the lead to 4-0.

St. John's scored a run in the top of the eighth, but Cushing stranded the bases loaded to preserve the lead. Grzebinski allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but retired the next three batters ending the game with a strikeout to earn his third save of the weekend and seal the sweep.

The Hoyas will next make a quick trip to Catonsville, Maryland for a midweek contest against UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue & Gray will then return to Shirley Povich Field for a three-game BIG EAST series against Creighton next weekend, May 3-5.

Notes – The series sweep was the first ever for the Hoyas over St. John's and the series win was the first by Georgetown over the Red Storm since 2009 … Ruedisili's eight home runs are the most by a GU player since Mike Garza hit eight in 2012 … The Hoyas have now hit 31 home runs on the season, the most in a season since 2010.
