CATONSVILLE, Md. – Four Hoya pitchers did not allow an earned run as the Georgetown University baseball team won its fourth-consecutive game on Wednesday evening, defeating UMBC 6-1 at Alumni Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 17-27 on the season while the Retrievers fall to 20-23.
Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) picked up his first career victory as he started on the mound, going 5.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four.
Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) struck out four in two scoreless innings of work while
Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) each fired a scoreless inning.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) was on base three times with two walks and a hit by pitch and he scored three runs.
Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) was on base three times with a walk, single and double and drove in a run while
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) doubled twice and drove in a run.
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) had two hits and stole two bases while
Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) doubled and drove in two runs.
The Hoyas jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning as Achecar drew a one-out walk and came all the way around to score on a two-out double by Rosen to give GU a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, McCabe led off with a double into the left field corner. A walk and fly out put runners at the corners with one out before Rosen delivered his second RBI in as many at-bats, scoring McCabe with sacrifice fly. Barreca followed with a double off the left field fence to push Achecar across the plate and extend the advantage to 3-0.
UMBC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Hoyas responded right back in the top of the fifth.
Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) singled with two outs and stole second before coming around to score on another double by McCabe, giving the Blue & Gray a 4-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Ruedisili singled with one out and promptly stole second. On the next pitch, he scored when Weisenberg lined an RBI single into center field, pushing the advantage to 5-1.
Achecar was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the eighth. He went to third on a single by
Kai Nelson (New, York, N.Y. / Fieldston) and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) to provide the final score, 6-1.
The Hoyas will return to Shirley Povich Field for a three-game BIG EAST series against Creighton over the weekend. First pitch in Friday's series opener is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start and 6 p.m. and Sunday's finale will begin at noon.
