Two Home Runs Not Enough as Baseball Falls at Xavier

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell in the first game of BIG EAST play, dropping a 7-4 decision to Xavier at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 8-22 on the season and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Musketeers improve to 10-19 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
 
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) started on the mound and allowed seven runs, six earned ,on 10 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out four. Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) fired 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout.
 
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) led the GU offense with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) doubled, drove in a run and walked twice. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) was also on base twice with a hit and a walk.
 
The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out rally. A hit batter and single put two runners on base before Willis drove in Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) with a double to give GU a 1-0 lead.
 
Xavier answered back with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second, but Ruedisili led off the top of the third with his team-leading fifth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 3-2.
 
After the Musketeers scored to make it a 4-2 game, Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) led off the top of the fourth with his first career home run, a blast over the left field fence. Later in the inning, Ruedisili singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) to tie the game at four.
 
Xavier retook the lead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 7-4.
 
Georgetown put runners on base in three of the final four innings, put could not push any more runs across.
 
Due to inclement weather in Sunday's forecast, the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday to conclude their three-game series. Game one is scheduled for noon with game two set to start immediately following the conclusion of the first contest. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
