WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's heavyweight rowing team welcomed Marietta College to the Nation's Capital for a trio of races on the Potomac River on Wednesday afternoon. The Hoyas swept all three races against the Pioneers in impressive fashion.
The third varsity boat hit the water first and crossed the line in first place in a time of 5:58.6, 11 seconds ahead of Marietta. The second varsity crews then took to the river and were even throughout the majority of the race before the Blue & Gray pulled away to finish first recording a mark of 5:47.8.
To round out the morning, the first varsity crews went head-to-head and Georgetown was able to put together a much improved performance to complete the sweep against Marietta finishing the race in 5:40.1. In the "A" Boat,
William Rau (Devon, Pa.) served as coxswain, followed by
Douglas Dreyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) at stroke,
Daniel Eigler-Harding (Arlington, Va.),
Clemente Borgogni (Rye, N.Y.),
Ian Estevao (Arlington, Va.),
Emmett Orts (Philadelphia, Pa.),
Luke Nassif (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.),
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.) and
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) rounded out the crew in bow.
"Overall it was a good improvement from Princeton last weekend," Head Coach
Luke Agnini said. "The 3V started the day off with a great race, after falling down nearly a length at the start, they had a very long rhythm that steadily allowed them to push away. The 2V had a much better start than four days ago and used that for a more substantial base of the race and more potent moves through the race. The varsity took about 1,000 meters to settle down and lengthen out. Once that happened, they put together a much improved last half of the race compared to the Princeton race. Marietta came to compete and raced very hard down the course in all three events. It was great to have my alma mater here to rekindle the Georgetown/Marietta competition that goes back a half century."
The Hoya heavyweights are back in action on Saturday, April 6 for a pair of races against Saint Joseph's and Temple in Philadelphia. The lightweights also return on Saturday, April 6 as they compete against Yale in Derby, Connecticut.
