WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday, falling 9-4 and 1-0 to Xavier in BIG EAST play at Hayden Field on Saturday. With the two losses, the Hoyas fall to 8-24 on the season and 0-3 in BIG EAST action, while the Musketeers improve to 12-19 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Game One: Xavier 9, Georgetown 4
Xavier broke open the game late to take the first game of the doubleheader.
Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) started on the mound and pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits and three walks while striking out five.
Chase Walter (Winston-Salem, N.C. / Forsyth Country Day School) struck out two in an inning of relief.
Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) led the GU offense with a pair of hits.
Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but
Matt Stone (Westport, Conn / Staples) evened the score in the top of the third with a home run over the left field fence. It was his first career homer.
The Musketeers regained the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, going up 3-1.
Three-consecutive walks with two outs and a wild pitch pulled the Hoyas within one, 3-2, as
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) crossed the plate in the top of the sixth.
Xavier pulled away with six runs over the final three innings.
Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) came up with a two-run, pinch-hit single with two outs in the top of the ninth, scoring
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) and
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) to provide the final score.
Game Two: Xavier 1, Georgetown 0
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) pitched 7.2 shutout innings, but Xavier scored the only run of the game on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to sweep the doubleheader.
Cushing struck out seven in 7.2 innings, stranding seven hits and three walks. He struck out a batter in five different innings, including two in both the first and fifth innings.
The Hoyas put two runners on base in each of the third and eighth innings, and put runners in scoring position in four different innings but could not break the deadlock.
The Musketeers scored off of
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) in the ninth with a one-out single and two-out double to clinch the series sweep.
Georgetown will continue its eight-game road trip with a midweek contest at Coppin State on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Hoyas will then travel to Villanova for a three-game BIG EAST series next weekend.
