BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped the first game of its series with Creighton, falling 7-3 on Friday night at Shirley Povich Field. Scheduled to play a doubleheader, Friday's second game was suspended after five innings due to weather. The Bluejays lead the second game 9-0 when play resumes on Saturday. With the loss in game one, the Hoyas are now 17-28 on the season and 5-5 in BIG EAST play, while Creighton improves to 27-10 overall and 7-3 in conference action.
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) started on the mound and fired 8.0 strong innings, tying a career high. He allowed three runs, just two earned, on five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense while
Kai Nelson (New, York, N.Y. / Fieldston) was on base twice with a hit and a hit by pitch and also drove in a run.
After Creighton took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first, the Hoyas answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. A one-out error started the rally before four-straight singles – the latter three by McCabe, Nelson and
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) – gave GU a 3-1 lead.
The Bluejays got a run back in the top of the fifth and tied the game in the seventh. With the score tied 3-3 in the ninth, the Bluejays scored four runs off
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) to pull away for the 7-3 victory.
