QUEENS, N.Y. – The Georgetown University baseball team lost a heartbreaker on Friday afternoon as Seton Hall won 6-5 in 10 innings in a BIG EAST Conference game, played at St. John's Jack Kaiser Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 19-31 on the season and 5-8 in conference play while the Pirates improve to 23-23 overall and 7-6 in BIG EAST action.
Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) led the GU offense with his first career three-hit game, finishing a home run shy of the cycle and scoring two runs.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had three hits and an RBI while
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) had two hits, reached via a walk, drove in a run and scored one.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) was on base twice with a pair of walks.
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) started on the mound and went 7.0-plus innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out four.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emory Weiner) struck out one in an inning of relief and
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as a double by Rosen and consecutive walks loaded the bases with one out.
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Rosen to give GU a 1-0 lead.
Achecar led off the top of the fourth with a single and was on second when
Matt Stone (Westport, Conn / Staples) lined a two-out RBI single into center field, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Burke did not allow a base runner until the bottom of the fourth inning when Seton Hall took advantage of two GU errors to cut the lead to 2-1. The Pirates used their first three hits to score twice in the bottom of the fifth and a solo home run in the sixth made it 4-2.
The Hoyas answered in the top of the seventh, putting together a three-run rally to retake the lead 5-4. Rosen started the comeback with a one-out triple into the left-center field gap. After a two-out walk to Weisenberg, Rosen crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Another walk put two runners on base before McCabe delivered an RBI single back up the middle to score Weisenberg and tie the game. Achecar followed with a single to left to drive in Ruedisili and put GU back on top.
Seton Hall tied the score as a squeeze play scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, knotting the score back up 5-5.
Both teams had base runners over the next two innings, but it was Seton Hall that delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to win it.
The two teams will wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for noon while game two will start immediately afterward. Links to live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
