BETHESDA, Md. – Pitching in his final collegiate game, senior
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) struck out 11 batters to set the program's strikeout record with 236 in his career, leading the Georgetown University baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Butler on Friday evening in a BIG EAST conference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 21-34 on the season and 6-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs fall to 26-25 overall and 6-11 in conference action.
Cushing went 7.0 strong innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while not walking anyone. He struck out two batters in each of the first two innings before setting the career record with his fifth strikeout of the night in the third inning. Overall he fanned 11 on the night and had strikeouts in six of his seven innings, with multiple strikeouts in five frames.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) struck out one in a perfect inning of relief to earn his second win of the season and
Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) struck out all three batters he faced.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) and
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) led the offense with two hits, a run scored and RBI apiece.
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) was on base twice with a hit and a walk while also scoring a run and driving in another.
Butler opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch. The Hoyas immediately tied it back up in the bottom half of the third as
Matt Stone (Westport, Conn / Staples) singled and went to third on a double by
Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar). He crossed the plate on a ground out by Nelson to even the score 1-1.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the top of the seventh, but the Blue & Gray again had an answer as consecutive doubles by
Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) and
AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) knotted things back up 2-2.
The Hoyas took their first lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four times to go up 6-2. Nelson led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ruedisili then lined a double down the right field line to put GU up by a run and a single by McCabe drove in Ruedisili. After Davis was hit by a pitch with two outs,
Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) launched a pinch-hit, two-run double off the fence in left-center field to provide insurance and give Georgetown a four-run lead.
After a leadoff double in the top of the ninth, Morreale came in and struck out the next three batters to preserve the win.
The two teams will conclude their series at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. Links to live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com. It will be the season finale for both teams as Georgetown's win on Saturday eliminated Butler from postseason contention and St. John's victory earlier on Saturday over Seton Hall officially eliminated the Hoyas.
