Women’s Sailing Team Finishes 13th in the Sperry Women’s National Championship

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's sailing team finished in the 13th spot in the Sperry College Sailing Women's National Championship hosted out of Sail Newport Sailing Center in Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. The Hoyas finished third in the Eastern fleet in the semifinals earlier in the week in order to advance to the finals. After four days of tough competition Brown University won the national title and the Gerald C. Miller Trophy.

The last day of racing began in windy conditions. The sailors did not catch a break as the winds held a steady 18 to 22 knots with higher gusts around 28 knots from a north-northwest direction. Because of the high winds fighting the current in the harbor there was also a significant chop around one to two feet high. The chop lessened a bit by the end of the day when the wind shifted right, moving in the same direction as the current.

The sailors completed six races in each division on the final day for a regatta total of 16 races in each division. The sailors only raced in the Z420s to better manage the high winds sailing one set on and one set off.

The Hoyas finished in 13th out of 18 schools with a total of 351 points, one point behind MIT. Division A finished in 10th place with 156 points. The boat was sailed by Haddon Hughes (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) as the skipper with Annabelle Ayer (Marblehead, Mass. / Middlesex), Macey McCann (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) and Celine Bennett (San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) as the crew. In Division B, the team placed 17th with 195 points. Gwynie Dunlevy (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart), Carly Broussard (Newport, R.I. / Kentucky Country Day) and Riley Kloc ( Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) served as the skippers and Hannah Hess (Inverness, Ill. / Loyola Academy), Marley Mais (Newport Beach, Calif. / Newport Harbor) and Olivia van den Born (Greenwich, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) served as the crew.

Racing continues this week for the Blue & Gray with the LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship, which takes place on Newport Harbor.
