Baseball Drops Series to Creighton

BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team fell twice on Saturday to Creighton in BIG EAST Conference games at Shirley Povich Field. In a game that was suspended from Friday evening, the Hoyas dropped a 14-2 decision, before the Bluejays won the series final 7-4. With the losses, the Hoyas are now 17-30 on the season and 5-7 in BIG EAST play, while Creighton improves to 29-10 overall and 9-3 in conference action.

Game One: Creighton 14, Georgetown 2
Georgetown trailed 9-0 when the game was suspended after five innings on Friday evening due to weather. AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) homered in the seventh inning to drive in both runs.

Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) started on the mound and went 4.0 innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on six hits and five walks while striking out six. Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) fired a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Creighton scored in all but two innings, including a five-run fourth inning. Lotsis' home run, a blast over the right-center field fence to score Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk), cut the deficit to 11-2 in the seventh inning, but the Hoyas could not rally any further.

Game Two: Creighton 7, Georgetown 4
Georgetown fell behind early and Creighton had an answer for every rally as the Bluejays completed the series sweep.

Lotsis had his first career three-hit game, including his second home run of the day, and drove in two runs to lead the Hoya offense. McCabe also had a pair of hits including a home run and Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) launched his team-leading ninth home run of the season.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) started and went 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. He struck out six. Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) did now allow a run in 2.0 innings of relief while Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) and Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) each pitched scoreless frames.

Creighton scored five runs in the top of the third to go up 5-0, but Lotsis answered in the bottom half with his second home run of the day and third of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence.

McCabe lined a solo home run to the opposite field in the bottom of the fourth before Lotsis doubled off the wall in left-center field to score Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School), who had been hit by a pitch, to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Bluejays used three doubles to extend their lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth, but Ruedisili answered with another home run, a solo blast well over the fence in right field making it a 7-4 game after seven innings.

The Hoyas brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, but could not cut into the lead any further.

Georgetown will host Maryland-Eastern Shore for a midweek doubleheader at Shirley Povich Field. Game one on Wednesday, May 8 is slated for 5 p.m. Live stats and a video stream for both games will be available at GUHoyas.com.

Notes – Cushing's six strikeouts gives him 221 for his career, which is good for third all-time in program history … He is just three behind Tim Adleman for second and eight behind Matt Smith for the career record … Ruedisili's nine home runs are the most in a season since Rand Ravnaas had 11 in 2010.
