Sailing Finishes in Top 18 to Advance to Gill Coed Finals

WASHINGTON – In the final day of the Gill College Sailing Coed Semifinals, hosted by Brown University with support from Dartmouth College and NEISA, the Georgetown University sailing team finished among the top 18 teams in order to advance to the finals on Thursday. The Hoyas placed fifth in the Western Semifinals with 186 points to advance. The racing takes place at host site Sail Newport Sailing Center at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island.

Tuesday and Wednesday's semifinals were divided into two fleets, an Eastern and Western, each with 18 teams. The top nine teams from each fleet advanced to the finals on Thursday and Friday. The sailors are racing on windward leeward courses in FJs and Z420s.

Tuesday started with some sun and winds from an easterly direction. The wind shifted around to the southeast and in the afternoon clouds and some rain came in. The winds averaged around 8-14 knots. The sailors were able to complete eight races in each division in each fleet on Tuesday and finish the final 10 on Wednesday.

Hobart led the Western fleet on the first day of the semifinals, 18 points ahead of second place team College of Charleston. The Hoyas sat in fifth with 94 points.

Wednesday was the lightest breeze day overall in the national championship series. The winds started strong in the morning up to about 12 knots from the north, but lightened up in the day. The winds were oscillating and right when it was getting to be too light at the end of the day, pressure built up again for the last races.

Hobart held onto its lead from Tuesday in the last day of the semifinals. The Blue & Gray continued to hold onto its fifth place standing throughout the racing. In Division A, GU tallied 113 points in the semifinals and placed seventh while collecting 73 points for a second place finish in the B Division.

The Georgetown lineup consisted of 12 Hoyas. Sean Segerblom (Costa Mesa, Calif. / Newport Harbor) and Andy Reiter (San Diego, Calif. / Point Loma) served as the skippers for Division A with Rebecca Fung (Rye, N.Y. / Rye), Noah Kelleher (Upton, Mass. / Concord Academy), Claire Mohun (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart) and Haley Shea (Rye, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) serving as the crews. In Division B, William Logue (Cos Cob, Conn. / St. George's) and Jack Reiter (Point Loma, Calif. / Point Loma) served as the skippers with Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands / Antilles School), Jack Hogan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake), Mohun and Gwynie Dunlevy (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart) serving as the skippers.

The scoreboard is wiped clean for the finals on Thursday as the sailors compete for the national title and the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy for the next two days.
