Baseball Sweeps Maryland Eastern Shore in Doubleheader

BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team got back into the win column, sweeping a doubleheader from Maryland Eastern Shore with a pair of seven-inning victories on Wednesday evening at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas won by scores of 13-5 and 4-2 to improve to 19-30 overall, while the Hawks finish their season with a 10-44 record.

Game One: Georgetown 13, Maryland Eastern Shore 5
The Hoyas scored at least three runs in four different innings and used a 12 hit attack to win the first game of the doubleheader.

Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out one. Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) picked up his first career win with 1.1 innings of relief, only allowing one hit with one strikeout. Chase Walter (Winston-Salem, N.C. / Forsyth Country Day School) fired a scoreless inning.

Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) and Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) each had three hits including two doubles to lead the offense. Nelson also had three RBIs while Weisenberg scored three runs. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored while Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) also had two hits, including a home run. Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) also homered.

The Hoyas wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, opening up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A walk, wild pitch and single put runners on the corners with one out before McCabe lifted a sacrifice fly to score Weisenberg. After a walk, Nelson drove in a pair of runs off the wall in right-center field.

Georgetown doubled its lead with three more runs in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Ruedisili launched his team-leading 10th home run of the season over the right field fence. Weisenberg followed with a double before Davis lifted his third homer of the season over the fence in center field to give GU a 6-0 advantage.

Maryland Eastern Shore scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5.

The Hoyas broke the game back open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) led off with a single and came all the way around to score on a double by Achecar into the right field corner. Nelson followed with his second double of the game, a shot into the gap that tipped off the centerfielder's glove. He went to third on the play at the plate and ended up scoring when Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) lifted a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to deep left field, extending the lead to 9-5.

In the sixth, Weisenberg doubled with one out and, after a wild pitch and a walk put runners on the corners, Achecar drove him in with a single into right field. A walk to Nelson loaded the bases before walks to Gamache and Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and a Matt Stone (Westport, Conn / Staples) hit by pitch all forced in runs, providing the final score 13-5.

Game Two: Georgetown 4, Maryland Eastern Shore 2
The Hoyas did not allow an earned run and three pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters as Georgetown completed the sweep.

Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) started on a pitch limit and went 2.0 hitless innings, striking out five. Jack Weeks (Reston, Va. / Paul VI) fired a career-high 4.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win. Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) struck out three in a scoreless inning for his first career save.

AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) had a pair of hits while Nolan Matsko (Baltimore, Md. / Dulaney) was on base twice with two walks.

The Hoyas opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as McCabe and Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) each delivered two-out RBI singles to score Rosen and Matsko, respectively, and give GU a 2-0 lead.

The duo of Bosch and Weeks were dealing on the mound, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning. However, two hits, a walk and an error scored two runs as the Hawks tied the game 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Stone was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lotsis laid down a perfect bunt for a single and both runners moved up when the pitcher threw the ball away. Achecar followed with a sharp single back up the middle to score both runners and put Georgetown back on top 4-2.

Lamon shut the door in the top of the seventh to seal the sweep.

The Hoyas will hit the road for their final road trip, traveling to play Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference Series. The games will be played at St. John's home field in Queens, New York as Seton Hall's field is under construction. Friday's series opener is set for 3 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon.

Notes – Redfern's strikeout in the second inning of the first game set the Georgetown team record as it was the pitching staff's 415th strikeout of the season, breaking the previous record set in 2017.
