WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team finished in sixth place in the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship, the final of three high caliber spring college sailing national championships that were run out of host site Sail Newport Sailing Center at Fort in Newport, Rhode Island. It was neck-and-neck racing throughout the finals and it was not until the last beat of the last race that the College of Charleston claimed the national title and the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy.
Additionally,
William Logue (Cos Cob, Conn. / St. George's) and
Sean Segerblom (Costa Mesa, Calif. / Newport Harbor) earned ICSA Coed All-American Skippers while
Andy Reiter (San Diego, Calif. / Point Loma) earned honorable mention.
Rebecca Fung (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) and
Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands / Antilles School) were both named to the ICSA All-Amerian Crews team.
The finals began on Thursday morning with light winds to begin the racing, delaying the sailors over an hour before the first race got underway. The race committee was able to run 10 races in each division on Thursday with eight races left in each division in the regatta on Friday. The racing stayed tight all day on Thursday with the top 10 teams very close in scores and the top five teams constantly moving up and down the standings. Competitors were faced with not only tough competition, but also shifty conditions.
After the first day of racing, Brown sat in first place, 22 points ahead of second place team Navy and the Hoyas finished in third place tied with the College of Charleston with 143 points, but beat the Cougars in a head-to-head tiebreaker.
"Racing on Thursday was way harder than the semifinals," said Head Coach Mike Callahan. "We tried to stay consistent and be in the top five. We did well in the beginning of the day on Thursday, but made some errors toward the end of the day and it's hard to catch up in this fleet."
A wind delay Friday morning kept sailors onshore until enough filled in to have a 12:10 p.m. harbor start. Winds filled in from the southeast and stayed light to moderate in the afternoon. The last races of the day brought some stronger pressure and hiking conditions. There were big oscillating shifts across the racecourse challenging the sailors to stay in phase and sail fast.
Racing concluded just before 5:30 p.m. meeting the deadline to not start a race after 5 p.m. The competitors completed six races in each division for a regatta total of 16 races in both divisions in FJs and Z420s on windward-leeward courses.
The Hoyas finished one point behind Brown for a total of 260 points. Division A for GU finished fourth in the division with 126 points. Segerblom served as the skipper with Fung as the crew. Division B collected 135 points, one point ahead of Tufts, with Logue serving as the skipper and Teare as the crew.
