WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team has officially ended its preseason camp and begun preparing for its season opener at Davidson on August 31. As the 2019 season quickly approaches, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each of the team's position groups, with this edition featuring the wide receivers.
Senior
Michael Dereus (Hyde Park, Mass / Williston Northampton) returns as Georgetown's leading receiver after finishing with a team-high 379 receiving yards on 21 receptions in 2018. He has caught 74 passes for 1,153 yards in his career and has scored 10 total touchdowns. Sophomore
Joshua Tomas (University Park, Ill. / Crete-Monee) played in all 11 games as a freshman, catching 17 passes for 163 yards while scoring both a receiving and a rushing touchdown. Junior
Max Edwards (Germantown, Md. / Georgetown Prep) tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions while hauling in 14 catches for 159 yards. Sophomore
Cameron Crayton (Rowlett, Texas / Rockwall) will look for a breakout year after appearing in all 11 games last fall with four catches for 52 yards and a score.
"We are extremely excited about the group we have coming back," said assistant coach
Nolan Swett, who works with the team's receivers. "Those guys have put in a ton of work during the offseason, from winter conditioning, spring ball and throughout the entire summer. They've had a great fall and we are really looking forward to having them step and up take ownership of the receiving unit."
The Hoyas will have plenty of depth at the position with several returners who are looking to increase their roles in 2019. Senior
Cole Miller (Leesburg, Va. / Heritage) appeared in two games last year with one catch for six yards while junior
Skyler Springs (Leesburg, Va. / Briar Woods) also only appeared in two games due to injury, catching four passes for 38 yards. Junior
Dijon Williams (Atlanta, Ga. / Miller Grove) returns after missing all of last season with an injury. He appeared in 10 games as a freshman in 2017 and had four receptions for 33 yards. Sophomores
Dylan Hatajik (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) and
Sergio Portobanco (Jamaica, N.Y. / Episcopal [Va.]) will both look to make an impact after not seeing the field in their freshman seasons. Georgetown will also benefit with the addition of junior transfer
Cooper Melton (Cleveland, Tenn. / Walker Valley / Tennessee) who spent the first two years of his career at the University of Tennessee.
"Leading into week one, it is great to see the depth we have at the position. Upperclassmen, guys who have been around but maybe didn't play much last season, and some newcomers who have shown up and done a great job in fall camp. But we are extremely excited about the depth we have at all positions."
Three additional newcomers will look to find a role in their first seasons on the Hilltop. Freshmen
Tyler Knoop (North Richland Hills, Texas / Fort Worth Christian), who is converting from quarterback this fall,
Dorrian Moultrie (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) and
Tiy Reed (Franklin, Tenn. / Battle Ground Academy) are all competing for playing time both on the offense and special teams.
"Camp was great for the younger guys. They had a strong camp and did a great job preparing themselves prior to getting on campus and being able to hit the ground running in terms of learning the offense and learning what it takes to be a college football player at Georgetown."
Georgetown will travel to Davidson on August 31 for the season opener before hosting Marist in the home opener on September 7. The Hoyas play all of their home games at Cooper Field and tickets for GU's five home games in 2019 are now on sale.
