WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team is halfway through its preseason camp, working hard to prepare for the 2019 season. As the Hoyas get ready for the season opener at Davidson on Aug. 31, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each of the team's position groups, with this edition featuring the quarterbacks.
Senior
Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz. / Boulder Creek / Arizona) returns after starting all 11 games last season. He completed 152-of-296 passes for 1,696 yards and nine touchdowns while also leading the Hoyas with four rushing touchdowns, including two in a win at Lafayette. He earned Patriot League Honor Mention selections twice last season, including after the season opener when he completed 26 passes for 369 yards and four touchdowns at Marist.
"Gunther has been excellent this camp and has become a gritty, tough leader," said Georgetown Offensive Coordinator
Rob Spence, who coaches the team's quarterbacks. "He has really taken control of the offense and has done a really good job. He has improved his mechanics and his arm strength and accuracy is much better. He has become more familiar with what we are doing and having fun and enjoying football."
The Hoyas have added depth at the quarterback position in 2019, returning three upperclassmen along with Johnson. Sophomore
Lorenzo Linsey (Monticello, Ky. / Wayne County) appeared in three games last season as a freshman, completing two passes for 14 yards. He also rushed twice for eight yards. Junior
Joseph Brunell (Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal School of Jacksonville) is back after missing last year with an injury and sophomore
Jack Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa. / Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) returns for his second year on the Hilltop.
"Joe has been a wonderful surprise. He is an outstanding player and has really come a long way in a short period of time coming off of his injury. He has done a good job in the weight room and put on some solid, good weight and it shows up in how fast he runs and how well he can throw the ball now. Lorenzo continues to improve and displays great athleticism and Jack has improved a lot from when he first got to campus a year ago."
A pair of freshmen in
Martin Butcher (New Orleans, La. / Isidore Newman School) and
Pierce Holley (Arvada, Colo. / Lakewood) are entering their first season and going through their first preseason camp at Georgetown. They will provide added depth as they learn Spence's offense and look to make an impact as early as possible.
"They are doing really well. They have probably learned as much in a short period of time as any group of quarterbacks I have ever had in college football. They have really done a nice job of understanding what to do. It's really hard to come in and learn at the pace and tempo that we have to go in camp."
Georgetown will travel to Davidson on Aug. 31 for the season opener before hosting Marist in the home opener on Sept. 7. Tickets for GU's five home games in 2019 are now on sale. To purchase tickets, and for more information, please visit WeAreGeorgetown.com/football.
