2019 Positional Preview: Running Backs and Tight Ends

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team is fully integrated into its preseason camp, working hard to prepare for the 2019 season. As the Hoyas get ready for the season opener at Davidson on Aug. 31, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each of the team's position groups, with this edition featuring the running backs and tight ends.

The Hoyas bring back their top three running backs from last year as sophomore Herman Moultrie III (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) returns after leading the offense in 2018 with 358 rushing yards. He had a pair of rushing touchdowns in a win at Fordham and also caught a touchdown pass against Bucknell. Junior Jackson Saffold (Orlando, Fla. / Timber Creek) totaled 271 yards on the ground last season, including scoring both touchdowns in overtime of Georgetown's thrilling 22-16 win over Lehigh. Junior Jay Tolliver (Columbus, Ohio / Gahanna Lincoln) was third on the squad with 170 rushing yards last year, scoring a touchdown against Columbia, while also catching 12 passes for 145 yards on the season.

"Herman has been the leader of the group right now and is having a great summer," said Assistant Coach John Bear, who coaches both the running backs and tight ends. "He is so sharp and crisp and looks like he is in midseason form right now. Jackson has done a great job coming back from his injury late last season. He is putting himself in a position to continue to be that hammer and a leader for us on offense. Jay is doing a good job adjusting on the fly as we try him in a few different roles in the offense to utilize his great speed."

Senior Zacciah Saltzman (Athens, Ohio / Athens), who had five carries for 14 yards last season, and sophomore Anthony Childress (Capitol Heights, Md. / Suitland), who converted to the position this spring, will provide depth at running back while also contributing on special teams. Freshman Joshua Stakely (Madisonville, Tenn. / Sequoyah) will look to make an impact in his first year on the Hilltop.

"Anthony Childress moved from linebacker during the spring and we couldn't be more excited about where he is at and how he has adapted to playing running back. Nobody puts in more work in the weight room or the film room than he does. And we have a really good freshman as Joshua Stakely has been able to come in and adapt really well to our scheme and we are expecting big things from him as well. We can't wait to have Zacciah and the leadership and depth that he brings back from an injury that has sidelined him for the start of camp."

The tight end group is led by senior and All-Patriot League preseason selection Isaac Schley (Littleton, Colo. / Chatfield). He appeared in 10 games as a junior, ranking third on the team last year with 19 receptions and sixth with 112 receiving yards. He had four catches in a game on three occasions and had a season-high 37 receiving yards against Columbia.

"Isaac has been phenomenal in camp. He has been a leader since he moved to tight end and had a great spring followed by a better summer. We are really excited about him, and obviously being a preseason all-conference selection, the rest of league respects him and the work that he has put in. We are expecting big things from him."

Behind Schley, the Hoyas will look to junior Zach Jewell (Centreville, Va. / Westfield) who is in his second season at the position and will look for an increased role in 2019. Sophomore Liam McHale (Bronx, N.Y. / Fordham Prep) and Chris Autino (Tinton Falls, N.J. / Ranney School) will also provide depth and look to contribute both on offense and special teams.

"Zach Jewell is a blue collar, tough kid. He comes to work every day with his lunch pail and we are really excited about him. He moved from defense last season and has had a great transition and adapted very well to playing tight end and we are extremely excited about his future.

"Liam McHale has had a really good summer and worked his tail off while he was on campus. He has been great in camp. He is a big rangy kid who has some ability in the passing game, but he has really found his niche blocking and being a great point of attack blocker. Additionally, Chris Autino is doing a really good job of absorbing our offensive system and learning from the older guys."

Georgetown will travel to Davidson on Aug. 31 for the season opener before hosting Marist in the home opener on Sept. 7. Tickets for GU's five home games in 2019 are now on sale. To purchase tickets, and for more information, please visit WeAreGeorgetown.com/football.
