Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 13 Hoyas Play No. 10 Duke Result to Scoreless Tie

WASHINGTON – Wednesday night's matchup between the No. 13 Georgetown women's soccer team and the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils resulted in a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of play in Durham, North Carolina. Neither team could find the go-ahead goal as both squads moved onto 1-1-1 on the season.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

"This was a very difficult game following a tough loss against NC State on Sunday," said Head Coach Dave Nolan. "Both teams were very well organized and there were few goal-scoring opportunities for either. Both were determined to get a positive result after losses on Sunday, and with the quick turnaround, I think a draw was a fair result. I believe we got better tonight and this will help us moving forward. Now it's on to Bucknell on Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both the Hoyas and the Blue Devils played pressuring defenses, allowing just five shots from each squad during regulation
  • Freshman Julia Leas attempted three shots on the night, a team high, including a shot in the 20th minute that went just above the crossbar in hopes of scoring the first goal of the game; she had another opportunity with less than 10 seconds left of regulation but Duke goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn came through with her only save of the game
  • The Blue & Gray allowed the Blue Devils to take four shots in the first 10 minutes of overtime, but a strong Hoya defense along with a save by freshman goalkeeper Anna Leat forced the two teams to go into double overtime
  • Senior Meaghan Nally led a tight Hoya defense against Duke in its home opener, allowing the Blue Devils just one shot in double overtime that went high

OF NOTE

  • The first time Georgetown and Duke met during the 2018 season at Shaw Field, the squads played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime
  • Duke outshot the Hoyas 10-6 but GU took four corner kicks to Duke's two
  • Leat recorded a pair of saves in the net while playing all 110 minutes; this was her career shutout
  • Seniors Carson Nizialek and Sarah Trissel along with sophomore Jenna Royson all tallied a shot on the night
