Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Goals Get No. 13 Hoyas Past Bucknell

WASHINGTON – A pair of first half goals from the No. 13 Georgetown University women's soccer team earned the squad a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon on Shaw Field against the Bucknell Bison. The Hoyas recorded their second shutout this season and improved to 2-1-1 on the year while the Bison fell to 1-3.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

The most important thing was that we got the win and we got to get some bodies on the field which was a positive. The game itself, I thought the first half performance was very good. We didn't really know what Bucknell team we'd get today; a team that presses us or a team that sits back. To be fair to them, they had a plan and didn't just sit back.

I thought in the first half we were pretty good, our movement was good, we got some chances and scored some goals. I challenged the kids at halftime and said we need to be a performance team and not a results team, but I was a bit disappointed in the second half. We were too disconnected; we could never get two or three people on the same page. As much as we had some kind of half chances, I never thought we created chances to run a play, which is disappointing because with that kind of game, it was an opportunity for us to sharpen up what we do at game tempo.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Paula Germino-Watnick started the scoring early for the Hoyas in the fourth minute; she got it in the back of the net from the top of the box unassisted giving GU a 1-0 lead
  • In the 44th minute, sophomore Caitlin Moon recorded her first goal of her career; freshman Gia Vicari took a shot from the left side of the box and as Bucknell's goalkeeper came out to save Vicari's shot, Moon was there inside the box to put it in the back of the net and made it 2-0

OF NOTE

  • Both Germino-Watnick and Moon recorded their first goals of the season; Vicari tallied her first career assist
  • Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Navarrete played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded her first career shutout along with a pair of saves
  • Bucknell had its best opportunity to enter the scoring column in the 72nd minute, but a strong Hoya defense protected the net
  • The Hoyas took 27 shots to Bucknell's three with all three shots coming in the second half; GU also took 13 corner kicks to Bucknell's five
