Volleyball Sweeps Opening Day of 2019 Georgetown Classic

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team opened the 2019 campaign with a pair of victories at the Georgetown Classic on Friday at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas defeated Rider 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22) in the season opener before outlasting Sacred Heart 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 20-18 in a thrilling nightcap.
 
Georgetown 3, Rider 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22)
•    Iva Vujosevic narrowly missed a double-double, leading the Hoyas with 13 kills to go with nine digs
•    Three other Hoyas had at least six kills; Margo Snipe (7), Elissa Barbosa (6) and Makayla Serrett (6)
•    Barbosa tied a match-high with 13 digs
•    Emma Plutnicki led the way with 28 assists while Ellie Watkins added eight
•    Barbosa, Plutnicki and Kelly Chen were each credited with a pair of service aces
•    Playing in their first collegiate match together, sisters Brennan and Peyton Wilhite combined for nine kills on 12 swings with no attack errors
•    The Hoyas hit an impressive .304 as a team, committing just 10 attack errors on 112 total attempts
 
Georgetown 3, Sacred Heart 2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 20-18)
•    Vujosevic finally got her double-double - and then some - with 26 kills and 24 digs
•    Plutnicki added 48 assists and 12 digs for her first career double-double
•    Riley Wertzberger nearly tallied double figure kills with nine
•    Jessica Cusi had 11 digs while Barbosa added 10
•    The Hoyas battled off four match points before flipping the script to win the match
•    Georgetown's 20-18 fifth set was the highest scoring final frame since defeating Northern Arizona 22-20 in 1999
•    The last time GU won its first two matches of the season was in 2012

Georgetown returns to action on Saturday as it closes out the Georgetown Classic with a pair of matches. The Hoyas host Central Connecticut (0-1) at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the nine-match tournament at 7 p.m. against Central Arkansas (2-0).
