Hoyas Rally in Second Half, Fall Late in Season Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Georgetown University football team overcame a 20-point deficit at halftime, but Davidson scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to defeat the Hoyas 27-20 on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium. It was the season opening game for both teams as GU falls to 0-1 while the Wildcats move to 1-0 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas ran just nine plays in the first half, totaling 74 yards.
  • Davidson scored on all three of its possessions in the first half to take a 20-0 lead, putting together drives of 87, 91 and 99 yards.
  • Georgetown opened the second half with a 78-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Moultrie. The PAT attempt was blocked to make it a 20-6 game. Johnson completed passes of 51 yards to Tomas and 10 yards to Crayton on the drive.
  • Michael Dereus caught touchdown passes on consecutive drives, just 3:02 apart to tie the score.
  • The GU defense forced three-straight turnovers in the third quarter. Deen had an interception, Marquis Parris forced a fumble that was recovered by Kessler and George Ikott recovered a bad snap and returned it 33 yards to the 4-yard line.
  • Davidson retook the lead with 4:54 remaining in the fourth quarter with a touchdown.
  • The Hoyas were stopped on fourth down near midfield and the Wildcats ran out the final 3:22 on the clock
 
OF NOTE
  • Brad Hurst booted a 76-yard punt in the second quarter that was downed at the 1-yard line. The 76 yards is a modern day program record.
