WASHINGTON – Georgetown University has added
David Heller and
Mere Serea as assistant coaches to the volleyball team for the upcoming 2019 season, as announced by head coach
Toby Rens on Friday.
Heller comes to the Hilltop with extensive coaching experience on the men's and women's side of the sport. For the past six seasons, he was the head men's volleyball coach at Mount Olive, an NCAA Division II program in North Carolina, while also serving as an assistant coach with the women's team. Heller finished his time with the Trojans with a program record 98 wins while coaching 26 all-conference honorees including both an offensive and defensive player of the year recipient, three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and one AVCA All-American.
Additionally, Heller has spent the past three years as an assistant coach for Team USA and the Collegiate Men's National Team, representing the United States at the World University Games in Gqangju, South Korea in 2015 and in Taipei, Taiwan in 2017.
Serea joins the Hoya staff after concluding her collegiate playing career at Maryland Eastern Shore under Rens in 2017. Sitting out her first season in 2015 because of injury, she was a dominant force at the net as a junior and senior. Serea led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 1.11 blocks per game in 2016 and posted a league-best 112 rejections in 2017.
Prior to her time at the Shore, Serea was a Junior College All-American at New Mexico Military Institute, leading the Broncos to NJCAA Nationals in 2014. A Suva, Fiji native, she was named the Sports Woman of the Year at Suva Grammar School before coming to the U.S.
Georgetown went 17-13 overall and 10-8 in BIG EAST play to tie for fourth place in 2018. Georgetown's 17 wins were the most since 2004 and the 10 conference wins were the most since 2001.
