Carolan Puts No. 15 Hoyas Ahead in Overtime Thriller Against Princeton

WASHINGTON – Graduate student Amanda Carolan scored the game-winning goal on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field to put the No. 15 Georgetown women's soccer team ahead of Princeton in a 4-3 overtime victory. The Hoyas scored a late goal in the second half to tie it up and force both teams into overtime. Carolan found her opportunity in the first minute of the extra frame and advanced the Blue & Gray to 4-2-1 on the season while Princeton falls to 2-2-1.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

I have to be happy about the win. We found a way to get a W in the game that at one point looked like it had gotten away from us. It was a great play by Boo in the corner to make something happen and we knew that it was going to take an extra bit from someone else to make a play that could win the game and we were able to get something out of it. I was disappointed with our performance, though. We gave up three goals and I didn't think they scored any good goals, it was more just bad defending on our part. That has to get better because right now we are leaking too many goals in our games. We move on to a different type of game on Sunday against West Virginia and we'll have to do a better job of managing the ball and compete for 90 minutes and not just in bits and pieces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Junior Kelly Ann Livingstone put the Hoyas on the board in the 10th minute; the defender headed sophomore Boo Jackson's corner kick into the back of the net giving GU an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Tigers made it even at one in the 17th minute from inside the box.
  • In the 37th minute, the Blue & Gray took back its lead; sophomore Devon Lis scored from inside the 6-yard box after junior Jenna Menta threw the ball in from the sidelines and it deflected off of senior Sarah Trissel who connected with Lis.
  • Princeton tied it up again shortly after the second half began with a shot from inside the box.
  • The Tigers took their first lead of the game at 3-2 in the 56th minute off of a free kick.
  • Sophomore Jenna Royson scored in the 77th minute connecting the passes from senior Paula Germino-Watnick and Carolan to force the teams into overtime at 3-3.
  • Within the first minute of overtime, Jackson created an opportunity on the left side, crossing into the box and finding Trissel whose shot deflected off of Princeton's goalkeeper and Carolan knocked it back in to claim the victory.

OF NOTE

  • This is the second-straight game that Livingstone scored; she had a goal and an assist last Sunday against Lafayette.
  • Carolan's game winner moved her up to No. 8 on the all-time list at Georgetown with 26 career goals.
  • Lis and Royson both recorded their first career goals.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Tigers 18-6 and took seven corners to their one.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Anna Leat recorded one save throughout the game while Princeton tallied four.
