Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 Georgetown Shuts Out No. 23 Mountaineers

WASHINGTON – Freshman goalkeeper Anna Leat picked up her first career shutout after the No. 15 Georgetown women's soccer team held No. 23 West Virginia to a 3-0 victory at Shaw Field. It was a team effort to get the win as seven different Hoyas recorded points on the day. With the win, the Blue & Gray move to 5-2-1 overall while West Virginia falls to 3-3-1.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

Today, our defense was tuned in and I think they were committed to supporting each other on the field and having each other's backs. I don't think there was one player today who didn't stand up to a physical challenge. The last two games we've been scoring off of set pieces, which is what I hoped we would do at the beginning of the season. We're starting to get consistent delivery now from our players. When our center backs are in the right frame of mind and they are disciplined and pulling the strings in front of them, we're difficult to score against. Today was probably our first good performance on both sides of the ball.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Jenna Royson put GU on the board with a late goal in the 42nd minute; she found the back of the net from a throw in by junior Jenna Menta, which deflected off of senior Meaghan Nally to connect with Royson as she knocked it in from inside the six-yard box.
  • Freshman Julia Leas made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute by heading sophomore Boo Jackson's corner kick into the net past a crowded WVU-defending box.
  • In the 83rd minute, Leas and senior Paula Germino-Watnick pushed the ball ahead to find senior Amanda Carolan, who had an open net to score as WVU goalkeeper Rylee Foster stepped out of the net to block Carolan's chance, but Carolan was able to make it 3-0.

OF NOTE

  • The Hoyas are the first team to shut out West Virginia this season and have not allowed the Mountaineers to score a goal in their past two meetings.
  • Carolan's goal bumped her up to No. 7 on the all-time list at Georgetown with 27 career goals, as well as No. 10 on the all-time list with 64 total points.
  • Georgetown outshot the Mountaineers 13-12 and both teams took six corner kicks apiece.
  • Leat made three saves in the net while Foster recorded two.
  • This is the second-straight game that Royson and Carolan have scored goals in.
