No. 2 Georgetown Hosts Providence on Saturday

WASHINGTON –  The No. 2 Georgetown University men's soccer team will host the Providence College Friars on Saturday in a 1 p.m. matchup at Shaw Field.  The Hoyas are currently  6-1 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, while Providence is 6-2 on the year and 1-0 in league games.

  • The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with alums Dan Helfrich and Tome Greaser calling the action.  Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.  Fans can follow the in-game scoring on Twitter at @GUHoyasMSoccer.
  • The BIG EAST has a dedicated channel on Caffeine, www.Caffeine.tv/BEDN, where fans can find all BEDN content. About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is coming off of a tough 1-0 overtime loss at No. 17 Louisville on Tuesday evening.  It marked GU's first loss of the season.
  • On Tuesday, the Hoyas moved up to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.  This marked Georgetown's highest ranking since the 2015 season.
  • In league play, the squad is coming off of a 3-0 victory over Butler to open BIG EAST games as Jacob Montes scored a pair of goals in the victory.
  • On Monday, Dylan Nealis was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his assist on the game winner at Butler as well as the defense getting the shutout.  Additionally, Montes was named to the honor roll for his two goals in the Butler victory.
  • It marked GU's second defensive award of the season and the third weekly recognition of the year.  Georgetown has also had two players named to the honor roll.
  • Zach Riviere leads the team in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist.  Three players have eight points as Paul Rothrock has a goal and a squad-high six assists, Montes has four goals and Derek Dodson has two goals and four assists.
 
About the Friars
  • The Friars are coming off four straight wins at home improving their record to 6-2-0.
  • On Wednesday, the Friars took down Brown 1-0 as Ramzi Qawasmy scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute from Joao Serrano.
  • In PC's first league matchup, the Friars defeated Seton Hall 1-0 when Paulo Lima scored the game winning goal from Serrano.
  • Serrano has registered two goals and three assists to give him seven points to lead the team.
  • Austin Aviza has started every game for the Friars and has recorded four consecutive shutouts.
 
 
Series with Providence
  • The Hoyas are 16-13-3 all-time against the Friars and 8-8-1 at home.
  • The last meeting was a 4-0 Hoya victory during the BIG EAST semifinals at Shaw Field a season ago.  GU went on to win the championship.
  • Earlier in the year, Georgetown defeated Providence 2-1 on the road. The Friars struck first, but the Blue & Gray answered with goals from Foster McCune and Dodson as the game winner came in the 89th minute of action.
