Hoyas Capture MAISA Match Race Championship

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team posted a dominating 6-1 record to take first place at the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Match Race Championship over the weekend. The win earns the Hoyas a spot in the national championships in the discipline, hosted by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) on Nov. 2-3 in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
 
2019 MAISA MATCH RACE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES (Sept. 28-29)
  • Georgetown finished the regatta with a commanding 6-1 record for first followed by Fordham (5-2), Hobart/William Smith (5-2) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (4-3) to round out the top four.
  • Sean Segerblom was the skipper while Annabelle Ayer, Scott Mais and Jack Reiter served as crews.
  • As the top two finishers, Georgetown and Fordham advance to the ICSA Match Race National Championships.
 
WOMEN'S SHOWCASE QUALIFIER B (Sept. 28-29)
  • Georgetown finished eighth in a field of 15 teams, tallying 234 points over the two-day regatta.
  • The Blue & Gray advances to the Showcase Finals, which features the top 18 teams in the country, on Oct. 12-13 in Annapolis, Maryland.
  • In the A Division, Gwynie Dunlevy (skipper) and Celine Bennett (crew) sailed for the Hoyas. In the B Division, Riley Kloc (1-10) and Carly Broussard (11-15) served as skippers with Macey McCann (1-3, 9-15) as the crew. Broussard switched it up and was the crew for races 5-8.
  • The A Division finished 10th with 134 points while the B Division placed fifth (100 points).
  • The A Division tallied four finishes among the top four but double-digit finishes in four of the last five races pushed them to its 10th-place finish.
  • The B Division's last seven races saw all single-digit finishes and the last six were among the top five.
 
TOP NINE COED AND WOMEN'S REGATTA (Sept. 21-22)
  • With 42 points, Georgeotwn finished first in a field of nine
  • William Logue (skipper) and Grace Flanagan (crew) raced for the Blue & Gray in the A Division while Jack Reiter (skipper) and Jack Hogan (crew) sailed in the B Division.
  • The coed regatta only got five races in with A Division tallying 23 points and the B Division recording 19 points.
  • The Susan Rogers '75 Memorial was raced in conjunction with the Top Nine Coed and Georgetown finished fifth of eight with 68 points.
  • The A Division tallied 28 points with Marley Mais (skipper) and Victoria Boatwright (crew) racing for the Hoyas. The B Division managed 40 points with Morgan Sailer (skipper) and Celine Bennett (crew) sailing for the Blue & Gray.
 
2019 CARL VAN DUYNE MAISA MEN'S SINGLES (Sept. 21-22)
  • Thomas McCann finished eighth with 125 points in the 18-person field.
  • McCann's efforts were highlighted by a quartet of top-five performances including a win in the final race of the regatta
 
UP NEXT
Georgetown continues the season on Sept. Oct. 5-6 when the squad competes at both the Coed Showcase in Annapolis, Maryland and on the friendly waters of the Potomac River as the Hoyas host the Tom Curtis Regatta.
