No. 6 Hoyas Travel to California for Two-Game Swing

WASHINGTON –  The No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer team will head out on the road for a two-game West Coast swing this weekend.  The Hoyas will face UC Irvine on Friday evening at 10 p.m. ET before taking on the UCLA Bruins on Monday at 8 p.m. ET.  Monday's contest will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network with Troy Clardy calling the action.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is 2-0 on the season defeating Syracuse 3-1 on Friday and then blanking Temple 3-0 on Monday in a pair of home matches to start the 2019 campaign.
  • Freshman midfielder Dante Polvara was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday as announced by the league offices. The freshman is the first honoree for the Blue & Gray this season.
  • Polvara took two shots and scored the insurance goal in the 75th minute in the win for then-No. 13 Georgetown against Syracuse. Playing midfield, he helped keep SU's shots on goal limited to five with 13 total shots in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray moved up in the United Soccer Coaches Poll sitting at No. 6, GU is also No. 9 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll.
 
About the Anteaters
  • UC Irvine's opening weekend resulted in a 2-0 loss and a 1-1 draw on the road at then-No. 11 Saint Mary's on Friday and Cal on Sunday.
  • UC Irvine's lone goal came from sophomore Beto Alvarenga putting away his first career goal and point in the 52nd minute Sunday.
  • UC Irvine began the season ranked at No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. They finished 2018 just outside the top 25. UC Irvine was also slotted No. 21 according to Top Drawer Soccer's preseason poll. UCI fell out of the rankings this week, but is still receiving votes.

About the Bruins
  • UCLA opened its season at the IU/Adidas Credit Union Classic hosted by Indiana, defeating Northwestern 1-0 in a neutral-field contest before falling 2-1 to No. 2 Indiana. Both games were decided in overtime.
  • UCLA sophomore keeper Justin Garces was named the first Pac-12 Player of the Week for the 2019 season. Garces posted a career-high seven saves to help the Bruins blank Northwestern 1-0 in the season opener.
  • UCLA will host No. 3 Maryland on Friday in its 2019 home opener.
