PHILADELPHIA – The Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped an 80-66 decision to No. 16/16 Villanova on Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the setback, the Hoyas slip to 11-6 overall and a 1-3 record in league action. The Wildcats improve to 12-3 on the season and 3-1 in BIG EAST play.
ON THE RECORD
"We came out flat. We can't just make mistakes the way that we did. Two quick mistakes and a turnover. We were right there at three points then went to eight and it was an uphill battle after that." - Head Coach
Patrick Ewing on the start of the second half
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Qudus Wahab led four in double figures with a career-best 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting while chipping in four rebounds and one assist in 14 minutes off the bench.
- Jamorko Pickett added 12 points and six rebounds. Terrell Allen and Omer Yurtseven each had 10 points apiece and Yurtseven added a team-best seven boards.
- Allen and McClung paced the offense with six and five assists, respectively.
- Georgetown shot 44.1 percent (26-59) for the game while the Wildcats shot 47.4 percent (27-57).
- GU forced 11 VIllanova turnovers while committing just eight on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hoyas trailed by as many as six (10-4) early but back-to-back 3-pointers from Pickett, both from the Terrell Allen pass, knotted the game at 10.
- Both teams traded buckets but it was consecutive jumpers from McClung and Pickett that gave the Hoyas the lead back (14-13) and later an alley-oop from Allen to Yurtseven tied the game at 19.
- Villanova staged a mini run to take an eight-point lead (31-23) but the Blue & Gray reeled off six straight behind buckets from Allen, McClung and Wahab, cutting the deficit to 31-29.
- Wahab continued to work inside to get buckets and converted a traditional three-point play to tie the game at 34.
- The freshman tallied another basket, managing the final nine points of the frame for the Hoyas, who went into the break trailing 39-36.
- Out of the locker room, VU scored quick and the Georgetown was down 10 before a Yurtseven layup broke up the momentum. The Wildcats were able to get points at the line but back-to-back triples from Jahvon Blair and Allen pulled GU within five (49-44), prompting the Villanova timeout.
- VU continued to pull away, leading by 13 down the stretch but the Blue & Gray continued to push inside and a Wahab layup cut the lead to seven (63-56). That's as close as the Hoyas would get as Villanove held on for the 80-66 victory.
