WASHINGTON – Despite a quartet in double figures and 46 from the combined efforts of
Mac McClung (24) and
Omer Yurtseven (22), the Georgetown University men's basketball team fell short 84-80 to the visiting Marquette University Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. It was the team's first home loss in conference play as the Blue & Gray slips to 12-7 on the season with a 2-4 mark in league action. Marquette improves to 13-5 overall with an even 3-3 mark in BIG EAST play.
ON THE RECORD
"The difference is that we didn't do a good job on the pick and roll. One, the guards are looking for the pick and roll; two, the bigs didn't get up in time to show or help. He was either driving away or splitting or driving around or we just were not there. They're a good team, [Markus Howard] is a good player and we can't give him everything." - Head Coach
Patrick Ewing
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- McClung led the way with 24 points, his seventh 20-point outing of the season. He added six rebounds, a trio of assists and one steal while committing just one turnover.
- Yurtseven added 22 points on a 9-of-17 effort, including a 2-of-3 performance from downtown. Yurtseven led the squad with 11 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season and dished out a pair of assists.
- Jagan Mosely and Jamorko Pickett added 11 and 10 points, respectively, to round out those in double figures.
- Mosely and Terrell Allen each had five assists to pace the offense.
- Georgetown shot 50.8 percent (30-59) for the game, including a 50.0 percent (9-18) effort from 3-point land, while holding the Golden Eagles to 46.9 percent (30-64) and 37.0 percent (10-27) from beyond the arc. The Blue & Gray was narrowly outrebounded 36-33.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game swung back and forth early. The Hoyas were able to pull ahead 13-9 as McClung, Yurtseven and Pickett were all able to connect to put together an 8-2 run.
- Despite the Golden Eagles staging a run of their own to pull ahead by six (19-13), a Qudus Wahab layup followed by a Mosely triple pulled the Hoyas within one and a pair of free throws from Yurtseven extended the run to seven and gave the Blue & Gray the 20-19 advantage.
- Trailing MU, Mosely and Yurtseven both found the bottom of the net to tie the game at 25. A McClung jumper would give the Hoyas a 29-28 lead but Marquette went into the break leading 42-36.
- Coming out of the locker room, Georgetown had the hot hand, outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-4 in the first three minutes to even the score at 46, fueled by 3-pointers from Pickett and McClung off of Mosely assists.
- Neither team was able to hold the advantage as the score was knotted again at 51 and 57. A six-point lead for the Golden Eagles was erased as McClung drained a pair of treys and Wahab sunk his jumper for the Hoyas to tie the game 67 on an 8-2 streak.
- An MU run pushed the visitors ahead but seven unanswered from the Blue & Gray, powered by a pair of Yurtseven jumpers and a trio of Blair free throws, provided the 11th even score of the game (76-76). Aided by late free throws, Marquette went on to seal the 84-80 victory.
OF NOTE
- Mosely's five assists give him 300 for his career, moving him into a tie for 20th all-time with Markel Starks.
