Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 19/20 Hoyas Fall to No. 12/16 Penn

WASHINGTON – The No. 19/20 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team staged a second-half comeback but it wasn't enough as the Blue & Gray fell 17-6 to the No. 12/16 University of Pennsylvania Quakers Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field.  With the loss the Hoyas move to 1-1 on the young season, while the Quakers picked up their first win of the 2020 campaign to sit at 1-0.

Sounds of the Game
  • "I thought we got outplayed early in the game and had trouble solving their defense.  We showed resilience in the second half with a strong effort, but it's difficult to sustain that energy to come back against a quality opponent." – Head Coach Ricky Fried

How it Happened
  • The Quakers got on the board first with a free position shot and then added another in the run of play.
  • Both keepers put on a show combining for eight saves over the first 15 minutes of action.
  • The Hoyas finally found an answer at 1:42 as sophomore Celia Walsh cut through traffic in front of the cage and went low for the unassisted tally.
  • Penn added one more to make it 8-1 at the break.
  • The Hoya offense struggled to get going in the second half and Penn managed to find the back of the cage to lead 9-1.
  • Midway through the period, senior captain Natalia Lynch connected on back-to-back free position shots which would spark a 5-0 run.
  • On the ensuing draw, senior goalkeeper Micheline DiNardo came up with a save to start the Hoyas down the field. The ball got to classmate Emily Ehle who had pinpoint accuracy to find Walsh in the middle who buried it.
  • Georgetown would keep the momentum going as senior captain Michaela Bruno found sophomore Ali Diamond on the right side who managed to connect.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to battle as a free position goal from junior Mary Pagano pulled GU within three 9-6 and forced a Penn timeout as the Hoyas were buzzing.
  • The Quakers ended the run with 12 minutes left in the game and managed a late 8-0 run to make the final 17-6.

Of Note
  • Lynch and Walsh led the way with two goals apiece as six different Hoyas scored a point.  Lynch also managed four caused turnovers as well as four draw controls.
  • Georgetown was outshot 35-22 and pulled in 10 draw controls to Penn's 14.
  • GU forced 19 turnovers, but committed 24 in the contest.
  • In the cage, DiNardo took the loss with 13 saves on the afternoon, while Penn's Krissy Kowalski had 12 stops and the win.
