Baseball Falters Late to Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Georgetown University baseball team led 4-1 in the eighth inning, but Davidson scored four runs over the final two innings to defeat the Hoyas 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Davidson's Wilson Field. With the loss, GU drops to 1-5 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 6-0.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Angelo Tonas cruised through 5.0-plus innings in his first start of the season, striking out 11 batters to more than double his career high.
  • Michael Willis fired a scoreless inning of relief and Miller Freeman struck out both batters he faced.
  • Alex Gamache drove in two runs on a home run and a double.
  • AJ Lotsis, Eddie McCabe and Will Salomon each had two hits, while Salomon also drove in two.
  • The Hoyas outhit Davidson 9-7 and the pitching staff struck out 16 batters.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gamache opened the scoring in the top of the second, lining a two-out solo home run over the left field fence.
  • The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when the Hoyas loaded the bases with one out. Salomon lined a single over the third baseman's head to score both McCabe and Freddy Achecar III and give GU a 3-0 lead.
  • Davidson answered back with a run in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Hoyas turned a double play to prevent any further damage.
  • Georgetown extended its lead back to three in the top of the eighth as Gamache lined a two-out double down the left field line to score Ryan M. Davis from first.
  • The Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut GU's lead to 4-3. They scored two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to win it.
