Georgetown Comeback Falls Short in Final Seconds

WASHINGTON – The No. 25 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team battled back to tie the game at 14 and had a look at the end, but a Hail Mary in the final seconds resulted in a 15-14 loss to the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays Wednesday evening at Cooper Field.  With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 2-2 overall as Hopkins improves to a mark of 2-2 on the season.

Sounds of the Game
  • "Tough lesson today, we learned that the game doesn't come down to just one play it's an accumulation of many plays.  They made more when it mattered and we didn't correct our mistakes.  I'm proud of the fight that we showed coming back, it shows we have resilience as a team and there was a lot to build on from tonight." – Head Coach Ricky Fried

How it Happened
  • Hopkins opened the scoring with a free position goal less than three minutes in.
  • The Hoyas answered with a pair of scores as senior attacker Emily Ehle found the back of the cage on a pass from sophomore midfielder Annabelle Albert.  At 19:24, sophomore attacker Ali Diamond gave GU the lead when senior captain Michaela Bruno found her off of the free position play.
  • The Blue Jays wouldn't go away with a pair of scores to move ahead, but the Blue & Gray would answer again.
  • Ehle scored on the pass from senior captain Natalia Lynch to tie the game at three, and an unassisted tally by Bruno on the right side gave the Hoyas the advantage with 10:35 to go in the half.
  • In the final 10 minutes, Hopkins scored four total goals as Georgetown scored two to stay close.
  • Albert hit the unassisted tally moving to her left at 7:22 to make it 5-4 in favor of the Hoyas, and Lynch scored at 2:13 on the pass from junior midfielder Mary Pagano to tie the game at six.
  • A goal from Johns Hopkins at 1:11 would put the Blue Jays on top 7-6 entering the break.
  • Hopkins scored the first goal of the second half as the squad would trade goals over the first five minutes.  Georgetown managed scores from Pagano and Lynch to make it 9-8.
  • Three Blue Jay goals put the Blue & Gray down four, but Lynch ended the run on an unassisted tally at 13:55.
  • After another JHU score, it was Diamond with back-to-back goals as Georgetown refused to back down.
  • The Hoyas would outscore Hopkins 5-2 over the last 10 minutes mounting a comeback.
  • Albert hit back-to-back goals at 3:38 and 1:22 and with 37 seconds to play, Diamond would power through the defense on the right side to tie the game at 14.
  • Georgetown called timeout and set up a play, running it to perfection but the shot was saved.  Keeper Kathleen Garvey would throw the ball up the field to Maggie Schneidereith who made the catch and went to goal with senior captain Noelle Peragine on her tail.  Peragine would get there, but Schneidereith managed to get a shot off as the horn sounded to give Hopkins the 15-14 win.

Of Note
  • Lynch had a huge night setting a new program single game record with 14 draw controls to go along with three goals and four assists.
  • Diamond managed four goals and an assist.
  • Albert scored the hat trick as well as an assist, and Ehle managed a pair of goals.
  • Georgetown held an incredible 26-4 advantage in draw controls, but allowed Hopkins to be 22-26 on clears.
  • GU outshot the Blue Jays 33-22, but had 16 turnovers to JHU's three.
  • In the cage, the Hoya keepers combined for just two saves while Garvey had 13 in the contest.
